RICHMOND, KY – Lauren Imsande scored the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute of play to lift the Eastern Kentucky Colonels past the Winthrop Eagles 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at EKU Soccer Field.
The Lady Eagles record falls to 0-3-1 on the season, while the Colonels improve to 3-3 overall.
The goal by Imsande came after Carly Muller crossed the ball across the field to Imsande, whose shot went off the top crossbar and hit inside the goal.
“We are a young team right now,” said head coach Melissa Heinz. “The team is playing well right now, but we have to limit our mistakes. We will ride these games out until we start conference play. This is the most talented team we have had at Winthrop, but we just have to blend the young players with the older players.”
Eastern Kentucky went ahead 1-0 in the 11th minute of action courtesy of Alex Hess with the assists coming from Imsande and Heather Bruce. Bruce got the ball from Imsande and made a crossing pass to Hess 10 yards out in front of the net and placed her shot by Winthrop sophomore goalkeeper Kelsy Weavil.
The Colonels held a 7-3 advantage in shots over the Lady Eagles and also led in shots-on-goal with a 3-1 mark. Eastern Kentucky also took both corner kicks in the first half.
Weavil snagged two saves, while Stephanie Lynch had one save.
The Lady Eagles tied the game at 1-1 in 49th minute after sophomore Courtney Durbin scored her first goal of the season on a corner kick by Tiana Tallant. Her initial shot was saved by Lynch, but Durbin rebounded to score the game-tying goal.
“The was a great goal by (Courtney) Durbin and it came on a nice assist by Tiana (Tallant) on that corner kick,” said Heinz.
Eastern Kentucky finished the match with 16 shots and seven of them came on-goal. Winthrop took a total of nine shots, while four were taken on-target.
The Colonels also had three corner kicks and the Lady Eagles attempted two.
