FLORENCE, SC –
The Winthrop women's soccer team was defeated 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup with Francis Marion at FMU Soccer Field.

The Eagles record drops to 4-8 with the loss, while Francis Marion improved to 2-10-1 with the victory.

The Patriots would take the early 1-0 on Winthrop in the 28th minute when Amanda Hall received a through pass from Angela Salem in the middle-third of the Winthrop side of the field. Salem would dribble to the top of the goal box where she would place her shot past the charging Kelsy Weavil for the goal.

The best chance Winthrop had of scoring all match came in the 19th minute when Erin Foote was awarded an indirect direct kick just outside the box after an obstruction call was made against an FMU defender. Her shot sailed over the wall, and was deflected by goalie Casey Durham.

Nina Connell had an opportunity to give the Patriots a two goal lead in the 73rd minute after receiving a lob pass from a teammate in the open field and had a one-on-one with Weavil. Connell could not capitalize as her shot went right into Weavil's hands for the save.

Christine Isabella tried to tie the game in the last seconds with a shot from 25-yards out, but was caught by Durham to end the game.

Weavil, filling in for an injured Dimi Poulos, finished the match with a total of five saves. Foote led the Eagles in shots with three.

“Kelsy did well in the goal this afternoon,” said head coach Melissa Heinz. “She made some good saves, especially with the one-on-one. It kept us in the game. We are now looking forward to getting back into conference play.”

Despite the loss, the Eagles outshot Francis Marion 14-13 and also led 8-6 in shots-on-goal. The Patriots held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Winthrop will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 11 as it hosts Presbyterian at 7 p.m. in Big South Conference action.
