ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team snapped their four-game losing streak on Saturday evening by defeating Presbyterian 3-0 at Eagle Field, in women's soccer action.

The Eagles improve to 5-8 overall and 1-3 in the conference, while the Blue Hose drop to 3-8-1 overall and 1-3-1 in conference play.

Winthrop would take a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute when Ann Lutzenkirchen scored her team-leading third goal from 25-yards out. Lutzenkirchen received the close pass from Christine Isabella, took a few dribbles, and nailed the shot past the diving Abby Young into the bottom right portion of the net. It was the first goal scored by the Eagles since defeating Austin Peay 2-1 in double overtime back on Sept. 21.

Erin Foote scored her second goal of the season in the 46th minute to give Winthrop a 2-0 lead. Foote scored after Rachel Webster made her way down to the corner on the right side, and crossed the ball into the goal box. Presbyterian goalie Abby Young would leap to snag the ball, but it would fall out of her hands and hit the ground. Foote recovered the ball and took the shot right in front of Young for the goal.

The Eagles would add their final goal of the match in the 64th minute when Courtney Durbin scored her second goal of the season to make the score 3-0. Kathleen Pollard started the play by dribbling several yards between the Blue Hose defense and made a through pass to Foote. Foote would then immediately pass the ball to Durbin, who made a move by Young and placed it into the open net.

“I am excited about this win tonight,” said head coach Melissa Heinz. “We worked hard and played well all night, and if we continue to improve on that our wins will continue.”

Winthrop dominated throughout the match both offensively and defensively. Winthrop outshot Presbyterian in total shots 19-1, and 9-0 in attempts-on-goal. The Eagles also held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Lytle Cannon took the lone shot for the Blue Hose. Young and Sarah Beth Anderson finished with a combined six saves.

The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 14 as they host Big South Conference foe Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m.
