ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop broke three Irwin Belk Track records and two school marks during the final day of the 2007 Asics/Winthrop Track and Field Invitational which attracted a field of 30 teams from 16 schools.
Junior Jason Williams (Cleveland, NC) set new Belk Track and school records when he cleared the high jump bar at 6-10. With that leap, Williams qualifies for the NCAA Regionals. Also setting a new Belk Track and Winthrop record for the 800 meter run was Brandon Hudgins (Rock Hill, SC) with a time of 1:51.75.
Junior Hurdler Kandrick Cooper established a new Belk Track record in the 100 meter hurdles with a clocking of 13.99. He had previously qualified for the NCAA Regionals last week at Clemson.
The Winthrop men's 4x100 meter relay team, consisting of Cooper, Green and sophomore Phil Jennings, and freshman Jared Simmons, both from Columbia, took first place with a time of 41.35.
Women's sprinter Shardal Twyman (Charleston, WV) claimed second place in the women's 100 meter dash with a time of 12.12, and freshman Sasha Robinson (Norris, SC) took third in the 400 meter dash with a time of 56.71. In the women's field events, Winthrop sophomore Ashley Howard (Wilmington, OH ), took third place in the discus throw with a distance of 144 feet, 4 inches. In the women's 4x400 meter relay, Winthrop claimed second place with a time of 3:59.96. Members of the team are Amani-Antia Obong, Aundi Lynch, Sasha Robinson and Rebecca Holmes.
