GAINESVILLE, FL--Winthrop's senior sprinter Octavia Goode had one of the top individual performances in school history on Friday as she set new school and conference records at the NCAA East Regional Championships being held at the University of Florida.
Goode broke her own Big South Conference and school records in both the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes and qualified for Saturday's final heats in both events. Goode was clocked in the 100 meters in a time of 11.55 seconds in the preliminary heat breaking her previous school and conference record of 11.6 seconds. Her time was sixth best overall. In the 200 meters she was timed at 23.61 to eclipse the previous record by more than three one-hundredths of a second.
She also anchored Winthrop's 4x100 record-setting relay team that also includes of Dee Dee Walker, Ieeshia English, and Tomeika Banks. The quartet turned in a time of 45.86 seconds to break their own school and Big South Conference mark by five-tenths of a second. That time was good enough for 12th place overall in the event.
"Octavia Goode was just tremendous today," said Winthrop head coach Ben Paxton. "Her performance was undoubtedly one of the all-time best in Big South Conference history. I am so proud of how she has competed against some of the top sprinters in the country. The NCAA East Regional is considered the strongest region in the country and for her to qualify for the final heats in both the 100 and 200 meters is a tremendous accomplishment."
