RADFORD, VA.- Octavia Goode and Joe Hall captured the top individual awards and a total of 25 all-conference awards were won by Winthrop's men and women during the 2003 Big South Conference Track and Field Championships which were completed Saturday at Radford University.
Goode was named Outstanding Female Track Performer of the Year after she captured the 100 meter dash (12.05) and the 200 meter dash (24.35) and was a member of the first place 4x100 meter relay team (46.77). Hall captured Outstanding Male Track Performer of the Year honors as he won the men's 100 meter dash (10.66), 200 meter (21.46), and was a member of the first place 4x100 meter relay team (41.08).
Both Hall and Goode had previously qualified for the NCAA East Regional May 30-31 at George Mason University. They will be joined by middle distance runner Stephanie Vangsnes who qualifed in the 800 meters with a winning time of 2:13.65, and high jumper Brandon Morton who took first place with a jump of 2.03 meters.
While those members of the Eagles won several of the individual battles, it was Liberty University who won the war as that school edged Coastal Carolina in both the men's and women's competition to capture the 2003 Big South Conference Track & Field Championship. The Flames are the only school to win both championships in the Conference's history.
In the women's competition, Liberty finished with 201 points, just six points better than Coastal Carolina (194) to repeat as Big South Conference champion. High Point University placed third (106.50), while Winthrop University (105) and UNC Asheville (91) were fourth and fifth respectively. Radford University (50.50), Charleston Southern University (45) and Elon University (24) rounded out the eight-team women's field.
On the men's side, the Flames of Liberty University used an even-narrower margin to squeak past the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina University, tallying 184 to capture the championship. High Point University (131) finished third, Radford University (101) fourth and Charleston Southern fifth (89). Winthrop University (71) and UNC Asheville (59) rounded out the seven-team field.
Each of the individual winners move on to the NCAA Regional, except for the winners in the 10,000 meters, decathlon and heptathlon.
