“Our challenge – and our responsibility – is to meet the demands of the present while we enable the future of the University.”
Growing our Legacy as a "Campus of Champions"
Trends are clear: college departments need to continually increase resources to compete on a constantly changing landscape. Now is the time when we must clearly demonstrate our support of Winthrop’s student-athletes and their potential in academics and athletics. The way to ensure quality and opportunity for student-athletes and future generations is through philanthropic investment. With your support of the Winthrop Athletic Department, we will consistently:
Attract, develop, and retain student-athletes who are top-quality students, great student-athletes, and role models to the Winthrop community;
Provide resources for our coaches to continually improve and distinguish their programs;
Provide distinctive and transformative educational opportunities that prepare our student-athletes for their entire lives.
Winthrop University continues its commitment to high standards and a level of excellence in all pursuits. For any program to excel at this high level, it takes focus, discipline and resources
Endowments exemplify the difference between good schools and GREAT schools.
Revenue from our endowment - through both deferred and outright gifts - is a critical source of student-athlete aid, facility support, and program improvement. Given the increasing economic pressures on both state funding and tuition revenue, now more than ever, the endowment is truly the margin of excellence.
You can ensure that Winthrop remains the Campus of Champions for generations to come by endowing a scholarship or sport-specific fund.
Closing the Athletic Scholarship Funding Gap
As a member of the Big South Conference, Winthrop gains regional and national exposure – a powerful marketing tool for attracting academically talented students with an affinity for sports. The NCAA allows Winthrop to offer 153.2 equivalent scholarships based on our 18 intercollegiate sports. If fully funded, Winthrop could provide $4.81 million in scholarship support to these student-athletes. In 2012-2013, Winthrop Athletics was able to provide 115.78 equivalent scholarships to aid in the support of student-athletes, 37.42 equivalent scholarships short of its full potential, totaling a funding gap of $1.14 million (Figures 1 and 2).

Figure 2. Gap in Athletic Funding for 2012-2013
This gap prevents Winthrop University from providing the resources, opportunities, and athletes that this department has committed to provide. It will be through your efforts and commitment to Winthrop University and its pursuit of excellence that will make the difference for both current and future student-athletes.
It is our goal to maximize our full potential and provide wonderful opportunities to deserving young men and women, and we are committed to growing the Winthrop Athletic Scholarship Endowment.
Establishing an Endowed Athletic Scholarship
Winthrop University remains grateful for the visionary support of our current endowed athletic scholarship donors. Their names are forever linked with our proud athletic tradition and the lives of many exceptional student-athletes who are proud to call Winthrop their alma mater.
We invite you to consider a tax-deductible, perpetual investment in the future of Winthrop Athletics and its student-athletes by establishing an endowed athletic scholarship. With a minimum commitment of $25,000 and an initial $5,000 gift, you can establish a named, endowed athletic scholarship. Further information on different methods of creating an endowment is provided under the “Ways to Support Winthrop” heading.
Once established, Winthrop will select and provide you with the name(s) of the student-athlete(s) who will benefit from your scholarship. The selection will be based upon certain criteria that you determine as preferences:
Participant in a certain sport;
Enrollment in a particular college at Winthrop;
Other criteria as agreed upon by Winthrop University.
By endowing an athletic scholarship, you will:
Create an enduring link between you and the University
Provide transformational opportunities for many student-athletes
Position the University to financially and competitively meet its athletic potential
Address a top priority for Winthrop: to build the University’s scholarship endowment
