Eagles Cruise Past Johnson & Wales In Home Opener

The Eight Goals Are The Most By The Eagles Since 2008

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop men's soccer scored five first half goals en route to an 8-0 victory over Johnson & Wales, Saturday evening in its home opener on Eagle Field.

Game Recap
  • Eagles opened the scoring in the 15th minute as Daniel Restrepo fought and won the ball from a Wildcat player, took a couple of dribbles and then fired a shot into the lower right corner from just outside the 18
  • Winthrop doubled its lead in the 18th minute as Restrepo's corner found the head of Lucas Lindstrup at the back post he directed it into the net
  • Teo Jelaca in the 20th minute for a 3-0 lead
  • Shota Kawagoe won the ball on a tackle that set Juma Baden into open space in the box
  • Baden found Jelaca in front of goal who placed a first touch shot into the far left corner
  • Baden made it 4-0 in the 30th minute as he drew a penalty and then stepped up and converted the penalty
  • Pablo Ortega scored with just seconds remaining in the first half to give the Eagles a 5-0 advantage at the break
  • Kawagoe served a free kick into the box and Ortega won a header in a crowd as it found the back of the net
  • Ortega netted a second goal in the early going of the second half (48')
  • Jorge Perez scored in the 62nd minute followed by a goal from Alfie Humphrey just under six minutes later to push the lead to 8-0

  • The Eagles are 2-0 to start the season for the first time since 2014
  • The eight goals scored are the most by the Eagles since 2008 when the Eagles won 7-1 over VMI in the Big South quarterfinals
  • It's the game with eight or more goals since 2007 in a 9-1 win over Brevard College
  • The goals by Jaleco and Humphrey were the first of their collegiate careers while Dominic Willis picked up his first collegiate point with an assist on the 8th goal
  • Ortega's two-goal game is the first by an Eagle since Bernardo Pacheco on Oct. 17, 2025 at Longwood
  • The last shutout by an Eagle squad came on Oct. 12, 2024 with a 2-0 victory over UNC Asheville

Looking Ahead
Eagles hit the road for the first of six straight on Tuesday, Sept. 1 when they head to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on Wofford College at 6 p.m.
