Eagles Fall Short in Extra Innings Against High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. -- The Winthrop University baseball team faced a narrow defeat against High Point with a final score of 9-8 in extra innings on Friday at Williard Stadium. The Eagles initially took charge with a strong second inning, but High Point's late rally secured the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Eagles took a commanding lead in the second inning, scoring three runs as Hernandez singled to drive in two. 
  • In the fifth inning, Winthrop extended its lead to 6-0 with contributions from Wouters and Grossington. 
  • High Point scored once in the bottom of the fifth, narrowing the gap to 6-1. 
  • Wouters doubled in the sixth inning, scoring Skowronski to make it 7-1. 
  • High Point responded with three runs in the sixth, closing the score to 7-4. 
  • Grossington's seventh-inning home run brought the score to 8-4. 
  • High Point rallied in the eighth inning, closing the gap to 8-7. 
  • A ninth-inning sacrifice fly from High Point tied the game at 8-8, sending it to extra innings. 
  • High Point secured the win in the tenth with a sacrifice fly, finalizing the score at 9-8.
