Eagles Struggle in Loss Against UNC Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- The Winthrop University baseball team fell to UNC Asheville in a 9-0 shutout loss on Sunday at Greenwood Field. Despite the Eagles managing five hits, they couldn't capitalize, while UNC Asheville secured the win by scoring in four different innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • In the third inning, Johnson singled to center field, driving in Swangim to make the score UNC Asheville 1, Eagles 0. 
  • The fourth inning saw Parks score on a wild pitch and Krumpe cross the plate on a fielding error, extending the lead to 3-0. 
  • In the fifth, Parks singled up the middle, driving in two runs, and Minarik scored on Lowe's sacrifice fly, bringing the score to 6-0. 
  • Swangim hit a double to right center in the seventh inning, clearing the bases for three unearned runs and finalizing the score at 9-0.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 

  • Garrett Byrd pitched 2.1 innings with three strikeouts and allowed one hit. 
  • Alan Benhardt extended his on-base streak to 20 games.
