Eagles Struggle Against Longwood in Series Opener

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The Winthrop University baseball team fell to Longwood with a final score of 8-2 on Thursday at Founders Field. The Eagles managed four hits and two runs in the third inning but could not overcome Longwood's eight-run performance, which included a three-run fourth inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • In the bottom of the third inning, Cade Norton singled up the middle and later stole second base. Jaylen Hernandez delivered an RBI single to center field, allowing Norton and Gabe Natividad to score, aided by a fielding error, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead. 
  • Longwood responded in the fourth inning. After a single and a wild pitch put Ben Pulliam in scoring position, Tre Keels singled him home. Jack McMullan's two-run homer extended Longwood's lead to 4-2. 
  • In the sixth inning, McMullan hit a three-RBI double down the left field line, scoring Brogan Jones, Pulliam, and Keels, pushing Longwood's advantage to 7-2. 
  • Longwood scored once more in the eighth inning with Pulliam doubling and eventually scoring on a groundout to first base, making it 8-2. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 

  • Brayden Gilley threw 5.1 innings with 3 strikeouts, recording a season-high of 5 ground outs. 
  • Garrett Byrd pitched 3.2 innings with 2 strikeouts. 
  • Longwood's Jack McMullan was pivotal with a home run and a three-RBI double.
