Eagles Split Doubleheader With Radford

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop softball earned a doubleheader split as it rallied to win game two 4-3 after falling 1-0 in the opening game versus Radford, Friday afternoon at Terry Field.

WHAT HAPPENED

Game 1
  • Radford's Isabel Harrison drew a leadoff walk to star the third inning and was moved to second on a sacrifice
  • Peyton Simmons walked to put two runners on and Amanda Lee followed with a single to left to load the bases
  • Two batters later, Malli Groves drew a two out walk to score Harrison for the game's only run
  • In the fifth inning the Annelisa Winebarger singled with one out and then moved to second on a Sophia Lawson pinch-hit single to left but was stranded as Emma Roberson lined out to the third baseman just over the line in foul territory
  • Eagles gave themselves a chance in the bottom of the seventh as Grayson Buckner doubled with one out
  • Buckner moved to third on an error that put Winebarger at first
  • Carli Pearson grounded out to second and then Tabitha Perry fouled out to end the game
Game 2
  • Radford struck first as it pushed three runs across in the top of the first for the early lead
  • Simmons led off with a single to left center and then moved to second when Lee drew a walk
  • Simmons moved to third on a fly out to right by Groves
  • After Lee stole second, Hailey Scott singled down the left field line to score Simmons but an error on the play allowed Lee to score from second and Scott to reach third
  • A sacrifice fly by Harrison scored Scott for a 3-0 lead
  • Tia Beckham led off the second inning with a double to right center, but was stranded
  • The Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a couple of long balls
  • Darrah Nickens led off the inning with a single off the top of the fence in right center, just missing a home run by an inch
  • Two batters later Nickens moved into scoring position on a groundout by Buckner
  • Winebarger stepped in and took an 0-2 pitch over the fence in left to make it a one run game
  • Tabitha Perry followed with her first career home run, a solo shot to center field to tie the game at 3-3
  • Winthrop took the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Emma Roberson set the table with a single in front of the plate as she raced to first ahead of the throw
  • Two batters later Bryden singled on a chopper to short to put two runners on
  • Beckham also hit a chopper toward second base and the second baseman Groves charged the ball and couldn't make the play as Roberson raced around and scored on the play to lead 4-3
  • In the top of the sixth, the Highlanders got the tying run into scoring position
  • Grace Bechtol hit a grounder toward third base that hit off the glove of Bryden trying to reach for it as Buckner scooped it up
  • Pinch-runner Layla Miles was too far around third as she tried to race home but Buckner's throw home was in time for the out and preserve the one run lead
  • Radford did get the tying run to second with one out and to third on a wild pitch, but Cardenas finished the game with a ground out and fly out

EXTRA BASES

  • Winebarger extended her streak of reaching base safely to eight games
  • Winebarger now has seven of her nine home runs on the year against Big South competition
  • Her seven in Big South play are the most since 2013 when Chelsey Schoenfeldt hit eight
  • Beckham hit her 26th double as an Eagle and her RBI single gave her 39 on the season
  • This was the just the second time the Eagles have been shutout in league play

Winthrop and Radford finish up the series on Saturday, Apr. 25 with a single-game at 11 a.m.
