Eagles Power Their Way Past Radford, Clinch Big South Regular Season Title

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop powered its way to a 7-4 victory over Radford to clinch the series, Saturday afternoon at Terry Field.

WHAT HAPPENED

  • Eagles grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first inning
  • Darrah Nickens and Tia Beckham drew back-to-back walks with two outs to get something started
  • Grayson Buckner stepped up and took a 1-2 pitch over the leftfield fence for an early 3-0 lead
  • Eagles doubled their lead in the third inning
  • With the bases loaded and one away, Peyton Bryden grounded to third as the throw came home for the force out
  • The catcher tried to get Bryden at first as well but the throw was over the head of the first baseman as Tabitha Perry and Emma Roberson raced home on the play to lead 5-0
  • Nickens followed with a double to left center to score Bryden from second
  • Amanda Lee led off the fourth inning with a home run to get Radford on the board
  • In the fifth inning the Highlanders made it a two-run game as pinch-hitter Klara Van Beuge hit a three-run homer down the left field line to trail 6-4
  • Winthrop got one back in the bottom half as Nickens hit a solo home run to right field with one out to lead 7-4

EXTRA BASES

  • With the win and a loss by USC Upstate on Saturday, the Eagles clinched the Big South Conference Regular Season Championship and will be the top seed for the Big South Tournament
  • Lonna Addison earned her 17th win in the circle, which are the most wins by a Winthrop pitcher since Sutton Watson won 17 in 2013
  • This is the 5th straight Big South Conference series win for the Eagles
  • Nickens two RBI day gives her 41 on the season, tying Bryden for the team lead
  • It is the first time since 2007 the Eagles had two players with 40 or more RBI in the same season
  • The 41 RBI are tied for 7th most in a single-season in program history
  • Eagles finished conference play with a 13-4 mark, the most conference wins since 2019 (14-10)

ON DECK

Winthrop's regular season has come to an end and will have to wait for the 2026 Big South Championship (May 6-9) seedings to be announced before knowing the day and time of its next contest.
