Nickens Drives In Career-High 4 RBI In Loss At Wofford

Spartanburg, S.C. – Winthrop softball battled in an 11-7 midweek loss at Wofford, Wednesday evening on Hope Field.

WHAT HAPPENED

  • Eagles struck in the top of the first for the early lead as Peyton Bryden singled with one out
  • Darrah Nickens followed with a double to left center as Bryden hustled around the bases to score
  • Grayson Buckner singled to right with two outs to put runners at the corners, but a ground out to third by Annelisa Winebarger ended the threat
  • In the top of the second, Tabitha Perry was hit by a pitch with one out to set the table
  • With two outs, Rebecca Amos and Bryden drew back-to-back walks to load the bases
  • Nickens stepped up and delivered again with a single to plate Perry and Amos but Bryden was nailed at the plate to end the inning as the Eagles led 3-0
  • Wofford battled back in the top of the third to take a 4-3 lead
  • Gracie Parker had a leadoff triple to right center and then scored on a Kalli Petty single up the middle
  • After a Desirae Devine bunt single put runners at first and second, Kaytlin Greenwood reached on an error that allowed Petty to score and Devine went to third
  • Abbi Campbell laid down a bunt to score Devine as Lonna Addison made the throw to first for the out
  • Another error allowed a run to score before Ali Bunch (relieved Addison) got an inning ending double play
  • In the top of the third the Eagles tied the game at 4-4 as Tia Beckham drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a Buckner single to center
  • A wild pitch allowed Beckham to get to third and Buckner to second but an errant throw allowed Beckham to score on the play
  • In the top of the fourth, Amos walked with one out and then stole second with two outs
  • Nickens doubled to right center to score Amos and then Beckham singled to left to score Nickens for a 6-4 lead
  • Wofford regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Addison Lucier drew a leadoff walk and then Kate Platte homered to center to tie the game
  • Two batters later Rivers Sampson doubled to left and moved to third on a bunt single by Parker
  • Sampson scored for a 7-6 lead on a ground out by Petty
  • Wofford added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth, pushing its lead to 11-6
  • Eagles did load the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh as Amos drew a walk to plate a run and bring the tying run to the plate
  • Bryden took a 1-2 pitch to left field but it was caught to end the game

EXTRA BASES

  • Bryden extended her hitting streak to six games, her third streak of six or more this season
  • Nickens drove in a career-best four RBI and 39 on the season
  • Amos tied her career-high of three walks and now has eight walks in the last three games
  • Beckham's RBI gives her 80 in her career, putting her 20th on the program's all-time list

ON DECK

Winthrop returns to Rock Hill to finish up the regular season as it welcomes Radford to Terry Field for a key Big South Conference series Apr. 24-25. The series begins with a doubleheader on Friday, Apr. 24 beginning at 2 p.m. and will wrap-up on Saturday, Apr. 25 with a single-game at 11 a.m.
