Five-Run 7th Propels Eagles To Comeback Win

Farmville, Va. – A five-run seventh inning propelled Winthrop softball to a 9-5 victory over Longwood, Friday evening in the series opener of a Big South Conference series.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Longwood jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning
  • Brooke Masingale drew a one out walk followed by a single to left by Sophia Knock
  • The Lancers loaded the bases after Maggie Hiatt singled to short
  • Emmy Cardenas got a ground ball to third on the next better and Peyton Bryden threw home to get the force out
  • Bailey Bucholz doubled down the right field line to plate two runs and a third run scored on an errant throw from Rebecca Amos
  • Sophia Piscano singled to center to score Bucholz for the four run advantage
  • Eagles got on the board in the top of the third as Peyton Bryden singled with two outs followed by a walk from Darrah Nickens
  • Tia Beckham stepped in and delivered a single up the middle to score Bryden to trail 4-1
  • Grayson Buckner followed with a single to center to score Nickens as Beckham moved to third and Buckner to second on the play
  • Winthrop made it a one run game in the top of the fifth inning as Nickens and Beckham started things off with back-to-back singles
  • Buckner sacrificed the runners to second and third to put two in scoring position
  • Annelisa Winebarger followed with a walk to load the bases as Carli Pearson stepped up and hit a fly ball to left, scoring pinch-runner Ali Bunch on a sacrifice fly to trail 4-3
  • Longwood loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth, but Lonna Addison struck out the final batter to keep the Eagles within a run
  • Emma Roberson led off the top of the sixth with a triple down the right field line
  • Nickens stepped up with two outs and put the ball in play that scored on a fielding error by the shortstop to tie the game at 4-4
  • In the top of the seventh, Buckner drew a leadoff walk and two batters later Pearson walked to put two on
  • Tabitha Perry laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over and on the play an errant throw allowed Buckner to race home for a 5-4 lead
  • Roberson followed by laying down a bunt that scored Pearson for a 6-4 lead
  • After Amos walked to put runners at first and second with two outs, Peyton Bryden stood in and delivered a three-run home run to center to lead 9-4
  • Longwood added a run in the bottom of the seventh but Addison closed the door with a foul and strikeout to end the game

EXTRA BASES
  • Bryden now has a four-game hitting streak
  • This was the first win at Longwood since Apr. 21, 2018
  • Eagles have now won six straight versus the Lancers
  • Bryden's single in the third inning was the 100th of her career
  • Addison tossed five innings of relief allowing one run on two hits to earn her 16th win of the season
