Baseball Erupts for Six in the Fourth, Cruises Past Elon

ELON, N.C. -- The Winthrop University baseball team scored six runs in the fourth inning to blow the game open and cruised to a 13-3 victory over Elon on Tuesday evening at Latham Park. 
GAME INFORMATION 

RECORD: Winthrop (24-13) | Elon (14-22) 
WINTHROP LEADERS: Corey Wouters (3-for-5, 3 RBI) | Alan Benhardt (3-for-4, 2 doubles, 2 RBI, walk) | Gabe Natividad (2-for-3, HBP) | Zach Greenberg (2-for-5) | Josh Skowronski (2-for-5, 2 RBI, SF) 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Winthrop scored three in the third as Greenberg singled, Cox walked and a throwing error on a Natividad bunt scored Greenberg before a Skowronski sacrifice fly and Wouters RBI single made it 3-0 
  • Elon answered with one in the bottom of the third on a Lawson Wheeler RBI single 
  • The Eagles put the game away with six in the fourth as Benhardt doubled to start the inning and scored on a throwing error before Skowronski singled home Greenberg and Wouters ripped a two-run single to push it to 7-1 
  • Benhardt drew a bases-loaded RBI walk and Norton followed with another to cap the six-run frame at 9-1 
  • Benhardt doubled home Hernandez in the sixth and scored on a wild pitch to extend it to 11-1 
  • Elon got two back in the sixth on a Gar Hindle two-run double 
  • Grossington singled home Natividad in the seventh and Will Lafferty added a pinch-hit RBI infield single in the ninth for the final margin 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
  • Tompkins earned his third win with six innings of three-run ball, striking out five on 85 pitches 
  • Randy Guzman opened the game with two scoreless innings before Tompkins took over in the third 
  • Ray McNaught closed it out with a perfect ninth, striking out one 
  • Wouters continued his hot stretch with three more hits and three RBI, raising his season average to the highest on the team 
  • Benhardt reached base in four of five plate appearances with two doubles and continues to produce in the middle of the order 
  • Winthrop improved to 24-13 on the season
