Hernandez & Gilley Power Eagles Past USC Upstate, 3-1

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The Winthrop University baseball team secured a 3-1 victory over USC Upstate on Friday at Founders Field. The Eagles' scoring was highlighted a Jaylen Hernandez solo shot, leading to two-run eighth inning, sealing their win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game remained scoreless through the first five innings as both pitchers battled.
  • In the sixth, Hernandez put the Eagles on the board with a solo home run down the right field line, giving the team a 1-0 lead. 
  • In the eighth inning, Josh Skowronski singled and stole second base, setting up Corey Wouters, who doubled down the left field line to bring Skowronski home. 
  • Will Lafferty then entered as a pinch runner, advancing to third on a single and scoring on Alan Benhardt's sacrifice fly to center field, extending the Eagles' advantage to 3-0 after eight innings. 
  • USC Upstate responded in the ninth with a solo home run by Wylie Waters, but Winthrop's defense held firm, securing the 3-1 win.

  • Jaylen Hernandez led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance, including a home run and an RBI.
