Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop softball split a doubleheader with USC Upstate on Saturday to captured the Big South series 2-1. The Eagles dropped the first game 7-0 before winning 3-2 in walk-off fashion in the nightcap.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- Eagles had a chance to strike in the bottom of the first as Peyton Bryden singled with one out and two batters later Tia Beckham doubled to put two runners in scoring position
- Annelisa Winebarger put the bat on the ball right to third base for the third out
- Upstate took the lead in the fifth inning, pushing three runs across
- Ella Christopher scored on a fielder's choice and then Alyssa Davenport provided a two-run single to left
- The Spartans added four more in the sixth as Taliya Thomas delivered a bases clearing double to lead 7-0
Game 2
- Winthrop struck first as Rebecca Amos singled with one out and stole second to get into scoring position
- Amos moved to third on a passed ball and then scored on a single to left by Darrah Nickens
- Beckham followed with a single up the middle to score Bryden from second to lead 2-0
- The Spartans tied the game in the top of the fifth inning on a Laney Jennings two-run single
- The Eagles looked to get the lead back in the bottom of the fifth as Beckham singled with two outs followed by a single from Winebarger
- Buckner laced a ball to right field but right at the fielder for the third out
- With one out and Nickens on first, Beckham singled to right center as Nickens moved to second and then over to third on a throwing error by the Spartans
- Beckham moved to second on the play as well
- Winebarger grounded to the pitcher as Brianna Riehle tried to race home but was thrown out at the plate
- Buckner stepped in with a chance to win the game and delivered a walk-off single to center for the 3-2 win
- Addison tossed a complete game, earning her 15th win in the circle
EXTRA BASES
- The Eagles earned their fifth walk-off win of the season and the second in consecutive days
- Amos' stolen base in the second game gives her 17 on the year, a new program freshman record
- The Eagles have now captured three straight Big South Conference series
- Bryden had two hits on the day and is now three shy of 100 in her career
- Beckham had six hits on the day and is now one shy of 90 in her career
ON DECK
Winthrop will hit the road on Tuesday, Apr. 14 as it heads to Charlotte, N.C. to take on Charlotte at 6 p.m.
