Lacrosse Overwhelmed by Mercer on Saturday

MACON, Ga. -- The Winthrop University lacrosse team fell to Mercer 19-3 Saturday at Five Star Stadium, dropping to 1-5 in Big South Conference play as the Bears built an insurmountable lead through a dominant second quarter. 
FIRST QUARTER 
  • Sofia D'Angelo scored 57 seconds in to put Mercer ahead early, and the Bears never trailed 
  • Caroline Glus and Reaghan Lomascola scored 20 seconds apart to extend the lead to 3-0 midway through the quarter 
  • Glus added her second goal at 2:45 to push the Mercer lead to 4-0 heading into the second quarter 
  • Mikaylah Lindsay made six saves in the opening 15 minutes to keep Winthrop within reach 

SECOND QUARTER 
  • Mercer scored eight goals in the second quarter to put the game out of reach, building a 12-1 halftime lead 
  • Glus continued her performance with two more goals in the quarter, giving her four on the day through two periods 
  • Katie Seiler scored Winthrop's lone goal of the half at 4:58 off an Olivia Paton assist, the Eagles' only response to a Bears surge 

THIRD QUARTER 
  • Mercer added five more goals in the third, with D'Angelo accounting for two of them to extend the lead to 17-1 
  • Winthrop committed five turnovers and recorded just one shot on goal in the quarter 
  • Lindsay made two saves in the third before Susan Kirchhoff entered in the fourth quarter 

FOURTH QUARTER 
  • Christina Warren scored at 8:57 and Audrey Argonish added a goal at 1:57 to account for Winthrop's final two scores 
  • Mercer's Ayla Galloway won the draw control on nearly every possession, finishing with 20 draw controls on the day 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
  • D'Angelo led all scorers with four goals and three assists for seven points, the driving force behind Mercer's offensive attack 
  • Glus finished with five goals on 11 shots, the most goals of any individual in the game 
  • Winthrop committed 23 turnovers while Mercer recorded 17 caused turnovers, a differential that defined the outcome 
  • Lindsay faced 32 shots and made 13 saves across 51-plus minutes in goal 
  • The Eagles fall to 6-8 overall and 1-5 in Big South Conference play with the loss
