Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop softball took game one of its Big South Conference series with USC Upstate courtesy of a walk-off home run by
Darrah Nickens for a 4-3 victory, Friday evening on Terry Field.

WHAT HAPPENED
- Upstate struck in the top of the first as Taliyah Thomas led off with an infield single and moved to second on a wild pitch
- After being sacrificed to third, Thomas scored on a ground out to third by Sophia Kardatzke
- Eagles threatened in the bottom of the first as Rebecca Amos reached on a leadoff single followed by a single through the right side by Darrah Nickens
- Tia Beckham stepped up and ripped a shot toward right center that was snagged by the second baseman
- Then Annelisa Winebarger hit a deep ball to right field that was caught on the run by Kardatzke a few steps before the wall to end the threat
- Spartans grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second as Abby Polk doubled to right center with one out and later scored on a single to left by Alyssa Davenport
- Upstate made it a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth as Johnson singled to left to lead things off, was sacrificed to second and then scored on a single up the middle by Davenport
- Winthrop tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning as a one out single down the left field line by Winebarger
- Grayson Buckner singled down the right field line followed by a bunt single by Mili Watts to load the bases
- Tabitha Perry came through with a single to center to score Winebarger and Buckner to cut the Upstate lead to one run
- Emma Roberson stepped up and plated the tying run with a foul fly to left field that scored Watts from third
- Lonna Addison worked a 1-2-3 top of the seventh setting up a walk-off opportunity
- Darrah Nickens came through as she hit a one out, walk-off home run to left field
EXTRA BASES
- This was the fourth walk-off win for the Eagles on the year
- Bryden's streak of reaching base came to an end at 15 in a row
- Amos had her 17th multi-hit game of the season and fourth game with three hits
- Buckner extended her hitting streak to five games
- Amos now has a seven-game hitting streak in conference play while
- Watts has now reached base safely in eight consecutive games against league competition
- This is the third conference series in a row that the Eagles have taken game one
- Winthrop extended its Big South winning streak to seven games

Winthrop and USC Upstate will complete the weekend series on Saturday, Apr. 11 with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
