Three Run 6th Propels Eagles To Win Over Bucknell

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop pushed three runs across in the sixth inning to break a tie and earn a 9-6 victory over Bucknell, Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Winthrop Invitational.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Bucknell scored in the top of the first, taking advantage of a fielding error
  • Winthrop tied the game in the bottom of the first as Rebecca Amos led off with a single and later scored on a double to right off the bat of Tia Beckham
  • The Bison regained the lead in the third inning, manufacturing a couple of runs
  • Eagles plated three in the bottom of the third as Peyton Bryden delivered a two-run double down the line followed by an RBI single to center by Darrah Nickens
  • Bucknell pushed two more across in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead as Regan Powell hit a solo home run to lead off and later Barbara Jo Coppola doubled down the line to plate Sarah Zimmerman
  • In the top of the fifth the Bison took a 6-4 lead when Skye Perez homered to left
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Nickens led with a home run to right center that came a few feet from clearing the scoreboard
  • Beckham followed with a double and moved to third on a single from Grayson Buckner
  • Beckham eventually scored on a wild pitch to tie the score at 6-6
  • Beckham delivered again in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double down the left field line to score Bryden for a 7-6 lead
  • Buckner hit a grounder to the right side as she reached on a single scoring a run from third
  • The throw to first to try and get Buckner out on the play got away from the first baseman, allowing Beckham to score on the play for a 9-6 lead
EXTRA BASES
  • Beckham had her first four-hit game of the season and second of her collegiate career
  • Nickens home run has her tied with Bryden for the team-lead with six
  • Addison earned her 8th win in the circle this year as she tossed 4.0 innings of relief allowing three runs on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts
  • Addison is now just one strikeout from 400 in her collegiate career (has 153 at Winthrop)
ON DECK
Winthrop is headed to Clemson, S.C. on Tuesday, Mar. 10 as it will take on nationally-ranked Clemson at 6 p.m.
