Clemson, S.C. – Winthrop softball fell 7-3 at #24 Clemson in a hard fought battle Tuesday evening.

WHAT HAPPENED
- Winthrop struck first as Rebecca Amos drew a leadoff walk to set the table
- Amost stole second with one out and then on a grounder by Darrah Nickens to second base was misplayed and made its way to the outfield as Amos raced around to score
- Clemson responded with four runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a three-run home run to left center from Corri Hicks
- The Eagles made it a one run game in the top of the third as Amos again drew a leadoff walk to get things going
- Amos moved to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a fielding error
- Nickens came up and hit a grounder to the right side that was misplayed but Amos was running on the play and scored
- Nickens moved to second on a wild pitch and was replaced by pinch-runner Mili Watts
- Tia Beckham flew out to right field and Watts took off for third on the play as the throw was off the mark and went into the dugout, allowing Watts to come home to make it a 4-3 Clemson lead
- In the top of the fourth the Eagles loaded the bases with two outs as Nickens was unable to plate a run as she grounded out to short
- The Tigers manufactured two runs in the fourth inning with an RBI groundout from Marian Collins and a sac fly from Julia Knowler
- Another sac fly in the bottom of the sixth increased the Clemson lead to four runs
EXTRA BASES
- Amos scored multiple runs for the fifth time this season
- Winthrop's three runs were the most it has put up against the Tigers in seven meetings all-time
- Buckner inched closer to her 150th career hit as she was 1-for-3 and now has 149
ON DECK
The Eagles are on the road as they head to Clinton, S.C. Mar. 13-14 to open Big South Conference action at Presbyterian College. The Eagles will play a double-header at 1 p.m. on Friday, Mar. 13 and conclude the series on Saturday, Mar. 14 at 1 p.m.
