ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Gabby Pierpont delivered the game-winning goal with 1:27 remaining as Winthrop rallied from a second-quarter deficit to defeat Old Dominion, 12-11, Sunday at Eagle Field.
FIRST QUARTER
- Old Dominion's Ella Bowen opened the scoring with a free-position goal at the 13:23 mark to put the Monarchs ahead 1-0
- Emily Hollinger answered 48 seconds later on a man-up goal off a Gabby Pierpont assist to tie the game 1-1
- Back-to-back Monarch goals from Macy Steinwedel and Bowen pushed Old Dominion's lead to 3-1
- Goalkeeper Mikaylah Lindsay made a key stop on Lydia Laney to keep the Eagles within striking distance
- Ava-Claire Collins converted a free-position shot with 3:13 remaining to trim the deficit to 3-2 heading into the second quarter
SECOND QUARTER
- Maria Snyder scored twice in 38 seconds to extend Old Dominion's lead to 5-2 early in the period
- Winthrop answered quickly with goals from Olivia Paton and Christina Warren in under a minute to cut the lead to 5-4
- Gabby Pierpont won three consecutive draw controls to fuel the Eagles' offensive momentum
- Lily Thompson completed a three-goal Winthrop run at the 3:05 mark to level the game at 5-5
- Old Dominion responded with two power-play goals in 74 seconds to retake a 7-5 halftime lead
- Lindsay made four saves in the quarter, including a free-position stop on Hopfensperger in the closing seconds
THIRD QUARTER
- Iris Leavitt got the Eagles on the board first in the third off a Christina Warren assist to make it 7-6
- Bowen pushed the lead back to two for the Monarchs, but Emily Hollinger responded with a goal off an Ava-Claire Collins assist to make it 8-7
- Leavitt converted a free-position shot at the 4:55 mark to tie the game at 8-8
- Mollie Calabrese gave Winthrop its first lead since the opening minute of the game, scoring at 2:38 to put the Eagles up 9-8
- Old Dominion's Natalie Calandra-Ryan spoiled the Eagle run with a goal at 0:38, sending the teams into the fourth tied at 9-9
- Winthrop outscored the Monarchs 4-2 in the quarter behind a dominant second-half defensive effort
FOURTH QUARTER
- Collins struck at the 14:53 mark to immediately put Winthrop ahead 10-9 to open the fourth quarter
- Old Dominion's Julia Butler tied the game at 10-10 at the 9:48 mark, setting up a tense final stretch
- Tori Iannotti converted a man-up free-position goal at 6:23 to put the Eagles back in front 11-10
- Bowen scored her fourth goal of the game on a power play at 3:36 to knot the score at 11-11
- Pierpont broke the tie with 1:27 remaining off an Ava-Claire Collins assist to give Winthrop the 12-11 lead for good
- Lindsay secured the win with a final save on Bowen and the Eagle defense locked down Old Dominion's last possession
