Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop softball split the second day of the Winthrop Invitational as it began with a 12-0 shutout loss to Georgia State before winning 3-1 against ETSU, Saturday afternoon at Terry Field.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Georgia St.
- Winthrop was left scoreless in five innings as Makayla Stephens tossed a complete game shutout
- The lone hit of the game for the Eagles came from Annelisa Winebarger with a single to the lft side in the bottom of the fifth with one out
vs. ETSU
- ETSU's Taylor Suchy reached base after an error by Carli Pearson allowing her to advance to second
- Lonna Addison struck out the next batter to leave Suchy stranded on base
- In the second, the Buccaneers had runners reach base on a single, a walk and an error at third base by Peyton Bryden
- Addison stranded all three runners on base after striking out Riley Martens and a groundout to shortstop by Tiare Rieger
- Grayson Buckner earned the first hit of the game for the Eagles in the bottom of the second with a single through the right side, but was ultimately left on base after Pearson flied out to left field
- ETSU was left scoreless in the third after Addison struck out her third batter of the day and Leinani Lutu flied out to center field, and a play from Buckner to Pearson got Suchy out at second base to end the top of the third inning
- Addison tossed a clean fourth to keep the Bucs off the board
- Darrah Nickens walked and Winebarger reached on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the fourth
- Buckner's first home run of the season gave Winthrop the lead 3-0, plating Nickens and Winebarger
- The Buccaneers were unable to score in the top of the fifth even after Abigail Taylor reached on a throwing error by Peyton Bryden
- Payton Moore put ETSU on the board with a solo home run at the top of the sixth, making it a 3-1 game
- Groundouts and a diving catch by Emma Roberson prevented the Buccaneers from extending their lead, giving the Eagles the win
EXTRA BASES
- Addison tossed her second straight complete game and seventh on the season
- The win improves Addison to 7-3 on the year and was the 30th of her collegiate career
- Grayson Buckner made her first start in the circle as an Eagle
- Buckner had three hits on the day and is approaching 150 in her collegiate career (144)
ON DECK
Winthrop will wrap-up play at home at the Winthrop Invitational on Sunday, March 8 when it faces Bucknell at 3:30 p.m.
