Men's Basketball Advances To Big South Title Game

Eagles Will Make Their 20th Appearance In The Championship Game

Johnson City, Tenn. – Winthrop held off sixth-seeded Presbyterian College for a 73-71 victory Saturday afternoon to advance to the Big South Championship title game on Sunday.
 
WINTHROP (23-10, 13-3 Big South) PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE (15-18, 7-9 Big South)
  • Triston Wilson (26 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists)
  • Josh Pickett (12 points, rebound, assist, steal)
  • Jonah Pierce (10 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks, 2 steals)

FIRST HALF
  • Eagles scored on the opening possession of the game as Kareem Rozier dropped in a three for an early lead
  • Eagles opened the game on a 7-0 run as Ed Nnamoko finished with a dunk off a feed from Kody Clouet and then Isaiah Wilson scored off a drive
  • Carl Parrish ended the run with a jumper in the lane at the 16:51 mark
  • Winthrop kept the foot on the gas as a basket by Daylen Berry ignited a 9-0 run to lead 16-2 with 14:16 left in the half
  • Eagles pushed their lead to as large as 14 points twice in the first half, with the latest at the 4:42 mark after a three from Berry
  • From that point, the Blue Hose ended the half on a 7-0 run to trail 32-25 at the break

SECOND HALF
  • Jaylen Peterson scored the first points of the second half as he boarded a miss and score to make it a five point lead for the Eagles
  • Eagles led by eight after a free throw from Nnamoko with 17:53 remaining
  • PC went on a 9-1 run over the next three minutes to tie the game at 36-36 as Parrish tied the game with a pull-up jumper
  • After Seifeldin Hendawy went 2-of-2 at the line, Triston Wilson drilled a three for the Blue Hose first lead at 39-38 with 13:35 to play
  • Jonah Pierce scored inside to tie the game at 44-44 and then PC took the lead as Iverson King stole the ball and eventually finished on a jumper on the other end
  • Winthrop was within a basket after Clouet converted two free throws with just under 10 minutes left
  • Josh Pickett put PC up five on the ensuing possession as he knocked down a left wing three to lead 53-48
  • Winthrop responded with a 6-0 spurt to regain the lead at 54-53 after a Duncomb layup with 7:41 remaining
  • After a dunk by Peterson put the Blue Hose back in front, Duncomb knocked down a short jumper followed by a Clouet straight away three for a 59-55 lead with 6:35 to play
  • It was a one possession game again with 4:35 left after Jonah Pierce hit two free throws
  • PC made it a one point game after a Wilson dunk, but he was whistled for a technical foul following the basket leading to two free throws from Clouet to put Winthrop ahead 66-63
  • Winthrop got the ball after the free throws and took advantage as Isaiah Wilson scored at the rim with an And 1 and completed the three-point play to lead 69-63 with 3:02 remaining
  • PC's Wilson knocked down a straight away three with 39 seconds left to make it a one possession game at 72-69
  • Triston Wilson made it a one point game with 18 seconds left and PC fouled with 7.9 left to send Berry to the line
  • Berry made 1-of-2 as PC had a chance for a final shot to either tie or win the game as Carl Parrish's three was off the mark

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Winthrop shot 45 percent from the floor and the Blue Hose shot 47 percent
  • Winthrop connected on 5-of-18 threes while the Blue Hose were 7-for-20
  • Each team finished with 13 turnovers each while the Eagles had a 16-13 edge in points off turnovers
  • PC had the edge in the paint, outscoring the Eagles 36-34
  • The glass favored the Eagles 34-31 as each team had nine offensive rebounds
  • Kody Clouet led the Eagles with 17 points as he was 8-of-8 at the free throw line
NOTABLES
  • Eagles advance to the Big South Title game for the 20th time in searching of a 14th league title
  • Winthrop has now won three straight and have 23 wins on the year, the 10th 23-win season in program history
  • Winthrop is now 14-4 all-time in the conference tournament in games decided by five or fewer points
  • Clouet surpassed 1,600 career points (1,615) after his team-high 17 vs. PC
