Eagles Earns Two Wins On Opening Day Of Winthrop Inv.

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop won both of its games on the opening day of the Winthrop Invitational as it earned a 1-0 victory over Georgia State and then an 8-7 walk-off win over ETSU.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Georgia St.
  • Lonna Addison tossed a two-hit shutout as she issued just one walk and struck out nine to earn her sixth win in the circle this season
  • The only run of the game came in the bottom of the first inning as Rebecca Amos led off with a single to get things started
  • Amos stole second with one out and then scored on a single by Darrah Nickens
vs. ETSU
  • Eagles jumped out to an early lead, pushing two across in the first
  • Amos drew a leadoff walk and then moved to second when Peyton Bryden reached on an error
  • Nickens came through with a single through the right side to score Amos
  • Then three batters later Grayson Buckner singled with two outs to score Bryden
  • Winthrop scored five runs in the third inning
  • Bryden led off the inning with a double off the wall down the left field line
  • Nickens then smashed a two-run home run to center on an 0-2 count to lead 4-0
  • Winthrop eventually loaded the bases and with two outs, pinch-hitter Sophia Lawson stepped in and cleared the bases with a double to right field for a 7-0 lead
  • ETSU got four runs back in the top of the fourth as it loaded the bases with no outs
  • Porter, Rieger and Taylor all drove in runs to cut the Winthrop lead to three
  • In the top of the sixth, Croley came through with a two-run single to left to make it a one run game
  • A fielding error in the top of the seventh led to the game-tying run as Moore raced home from first on the play
  • In the top of the 8th, Croley was placed on second to start the inning and moved to third on sacrifice bunt
  • The next batter hit a grounder to second as Carli Pearson fielded it and threw home as she nailed Croley at the plate to keep the game tied
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Grayson Buckner was placed on second and moved to third on a ground out to the right side by Ali Bunch
  • With two outs, Emma Roberson singled up the middle for the walk-off win

EXTRA BASES
  • With the wins, the Eagles have won four straight
  • Bryden extended her hitting streak to seven games, tying her season-best streak
  • Nickens has now reached base safely in 10 straight games
  • Addison's nine strikeouts were one shy of her season-best

ON DECK
Winthrop is back in action Saturday morning as it will take on Georgia State at 11 a.m. followed by a 1:30 p.m. contest with ETSU on day two of the Winthrop Invitational.
