Eagles Eight-Game Win Streak Snapped in Loss at No. 7 Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. -- No. 7 Auburn starter Jake Marciano tossed six shutout innings, as the Tigers rolled past Winthrop, 10-0, in seven innings Friday evening at Plainsman Park.

GAME INFORMATION
RECORD:
Winthrop (10-3) | No. 6 Auburn (11-2)
WINTHROP LEADERS: Corey Wouters (1-for-3, double), Josh Skowronski (1-for-2, HBP), Cade Norton (1-for-1, walk, HBP, SB)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Winthrop put two on in the first when Gabe Natividad and Skowronski were hit by pitches, but Alan Benhardt grounded into a double play and Hernandez struck out to strand Natividad at third
  • Auburn struck for three in the bottom of the first as Bristol Carter walked, Chris Rembert singled and Fralick drove a three-run homer to right field for a 3-0 lead
  • Wouters doubled to right center to lead off the second, but the Eagles left him stranded after a lineout, strikeout and groundout
  • Brayden Gilley settled in with scoreless second and third innings before Mason McCraine tripled down the right field line in the fourth and Carter followed with a two-run homer to left to push the lead to 5-0
  • The Tigers blew it open with five in the fifth as a Rembert sacrifice fly made it 6-0 before a Winthrop error in left field allowed two more to score and Eric Guevara capped the inning with a two-run homer to left center for a 10-0 lead
  • Marciano was dominant throughout, scattering three hits and striking out six while issuing just one walk in his six innings of work
  • Ethan Harden retired the Eagles in order in the seventh to close out the run-rule victory

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Gilley took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits over 3.2 innings with two home runs surrendered
  • Winthrop managed just three hits on the night and could not push a run across despite putting runners on in three of the first five innings
  • Carter reached base all five times for Auburn, going 2-for-3 with a homer, two walks and three stolen bases
  • The loss snapped Winthrop's eight-game winning streak
