Lacrosse Downed by Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Winthrop University lacrosse team was dealt its second straight loss on the season, falling to the 49ers, 21-12, on Wednesday afternoon.
FIRST PERIOD
  • Charlotte earned the first draw control of the period by Olivia Andrus
  • A successful clear attempt by Charlotte after turnovers from both teams and saved shots on goal by Katie Ling allowed Katie Gorski to get the first goal of the game at 08:40
  • A wide shot on goal from Christina Warren gave Charlotte another successful clear attempt to score their second goal of the first period by Sophia Rakis, making it a 2-0 game
  • Rakis then made it 3-0 with her second consecutive goal of the day after a crossbar shot on goal by Tori Iannotti
  • A foul on Lily Davis let the 49ers have a free position shot on goal by Reagan Underwood, giving them a 4-0 lead at the 02:30 mark
  • The 49ers earned the draw control and added another goal to their lead by Isabella Castelino, then made it a 6-0 game with a goal by Isa Torres with a turnover by Ava-Claire Collins at the end of the first

SECOND PERIOD
  • A wide and post shot from Katie Seiler who retained possession allowed Gabby Pierpont to earn the Eagles' first goal of the game and first of the second period
  • Iris Leavitt received a green card, with the 49ers having a man-up, Rakis scored her third goal of the game, and was quickly met with another goal by Isa Torres after a Charlotte draw control, bringing the score 8-1 at the 11:18 mark
  • Another Charlotte draw control brought the lead over the Eagles to eight with a Brenna Romanello goal
  • Tori Iannotti cut the lead 9-2 after a wide shot by Torres allowed Katie Seiler to pick up a ground ball and make way for a clear attempt
  • The 49ers quickly bounced back to an eight-goal lead after a successful draw control by Olivia Andrus
  • A groundball pickup by Leavitt gave the Eagles another successful clear attempt, with Sofia Sabatini cutting into the lead with an unassisted goal, making it 10-3
  • A turnover by goalkeeper Katie Ling allowed Lily Thompson to net her first goal of the game, bringing the score 10-4 at the 06:13 mark
  • Even with three consecutive goals, the 49ers regained their momentum with three goals of their own: a man-up goal by Romanello, a goal by Rakis, and an unassisted goal by Torres, bringing the score 13-5 at the half

THIRD PERIOD
  • Turnovers at the start of the third were exchanged until Rakis scored her fifth goal of the game at the 12:03 mark
  • A ground ball pickup by Torres after a Lily Davis turnover put the 49ers lead into double digits with back-to-back goals from Avery Olsen
  • Charlotte got their fourth goal of the period by Reagan Underwood
  • Emily Hollinger got Winthrop on the board in the third period with an assisted goal by Iannotti
  • A turnover by Lily Thompson broke the scoreless spell, allowing Torres to score her fourth goal of the game at 02:10
  • Ava-Claire Collins ended the period with a stand-alone goal, bringing the score 18-7 going into the fourth

FOURTH PERIOD
  • A shot clock violation by Winthrop put Charlotte on the board first in the fourth period with a goal by Romanello
  • It was quickly met with an unassisted goal by Iannotti to bring the score 19-8
  • Charlotte responded with a goal from Ella Suglia
  • Winthrop then had an offensive surge with consecutive goals from Ashlee Gensits, Tiffany Kelley, and back-to-back goals by Olivia Paton to make it a 20-12 game
  • The 49ers ended the period with a goal from Karsen Corbett, with the Eagles ultimately falling to Charlotte 21-12
