ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The Winthrop University baseball team blanked Charleston Southern, 4-0, on Friday evening at Founders Field behind a combined shutout from
Brayden Gilley and
Harrison Wilson to open the Big South series.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- McGuire led off the second with a solo homer to deep left to put Winthrop on the board at 1-0
- Hernandez added a solo shot down the right field line in the fourth to double the lead
- Crowley and Grossington followed with back-to-back singles before Natividad cleared the bases with a two-run triple to right center for a 4-0 cushion
- Gilley set the tone on the mound, holding Charleston Southern to two hits over six scoreless innings with five strikeouts on 76 pitches
- Wilson took over in the seventh and matched Gilley's zeros, allowing two hits over three scoreless innings to complete the shutout
- Charleston Southern threatened in the ninth when Alex Marot doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch, but Wilson got a fly out to end it

- Gilley earned his fourth win of the season, lowering his ERA with another strong outing
- Wilson has been one of Winthrop's most reliable late-game arms all season, and his three scoreless frames continued that trend
- Hernandez's homer extended his power surge, having gone deep multiple times over the last several weeks
- Charleston Southern starter Titus Von Kapff struck out eight but gave up two homers across eight innings
- Winthrop improved to 4-0 in Big South play and has won four of its last five overall
