ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The Winthrop University lacrosse team dropped its Big South Conference opener to High Point, 16-6, Wednesday at Eagle Field after the Panthers scored seven unanswered goals in the second quarter to pull away from a close first-quarter contest.
FIRST QUARTER
- Ava-Claire Collins opened the scoring 53 seconds in off an Iris Leavitt assist to put Winthrop ahead 1-0
- Lily Trout answered with a free-position goal at 11:51 to level the game at 1-1
- Anna Checkosky and Bella Germani scored 27 seconds apart to give High Point a 3-1 lead
- Gabby Pierpont cut it to one with an unassisted goal at 3:46, making it 3-2 heading into the second quarter
SECOND QUARTER
- Tatum Goettelmann and Shannon Smith scored back-to-back to push the lead to 5-2 inside the first two minutes
- Emma Calhoun entered in goal after a man-up Trout goal made it 6-2 at the 10:19 mark
- Trout scored twice in 26 seconds, sandwiched around a Goettelmann goal, to extend the lead to 8-2
- Eva Thorn and Kate Prentice added goals in the final two minutes to make it 10-2 at the half
- Winthrop turned the ball over nine times and was outscored 7-0 in the quarter
THIRD QUARTER
- Smith and Lauren Pujolar scored seven seconds apart to open the third and push the lead to 12-2
- Mollie Calabrese ended a lengthy scoring drought at 10:47 to make it 12-3
- Tori Iannotti converted a free-position shot at 2:52 to pull Winthrop within nine at 13-4
FOURTH QUARTER
- Iannotti converted another free-position shot at 8:50 to make it 13-5
- High Point responded with goals from Gretchen Kawecki and Kayleigh White to push the lead back to 10
- Tiffany Kelley scored a man-down goal at 3:42 off an Abigail Hand assist
- High Point closed the scoring on a Frescoln free-position goal at 2:28
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- High Point's Lily Trout finished with three goals and four assists, driving the Panthers' second-quarter explosion
- Winthrop committed 22 turnovers, including nine in the second quarter, which proved decisive
- Iannotti led the Eagles with two free-position goals, both in the second half
- Kelley's man-down goal was a bright spot in an otherwise difficult second half
- Calhoun made eight saves in 40-plus minutes of relief work
