Charlotte, N.C. – Winthrop softball dropped its midweek matchup 8-5 to Queens Tuesday evening after a four-run sixth inning comeback by the Royals.

WHAT HAPPENED
- Winthrop had a strong start in the top of the first, with Rebecca Amos and Peyton Bryden both singling to left field
- With Darrah Nickens reaching on a fielder's choice, Amos was able to earn the first run of the game
- The second inning was also dominant for the Eagles, with four runs scored
- Tabitha Perry singled to start off the inning, and Bryden reached on a throwing error to plate Perry
- Nickens then doubled down the right field line, plating Bryden to increase the lead 3-0
- Tia Beckham hit a two-run home run to make it a 5-0 game
- Emmy Cardenas left Queens with no hits or runs in the first two innings before exiting her start
- Queens got on the board in the bottom of the third after a single from Sage Farmer scored Kami Diaz
- A double from Olivia Thornton then scored Farmer, cutting into the Eagles' lead 5-2
- A fielding error in left field allowed Lilia Alpuché to reach third base and score Shayna Suttles and Lindsay Henson, making it a one-run game
- Queens took the lead in the bottom of the sixth after a pair of singles, a wild pitch, and a walk, bringing the score 8-5
- Winthrop was unable to score in the seventh despite a couple of well hit balls
EXTRA BASES
- Bryden's single in the first extended her streak of reaching base safely to 10 games
- The single was also the 90th hit of her career
- Beckham hit her 17th career home run and sits 13th on Winthrop's all-time list
- She also became the 23rd player in program history to reach 70 career RBI as an Eagle
- She has now hit a two-run home run in back-to-back games
- Nickens extended her streak of reaching base safely to eight games
ON DECK
Winthrop remains on the road as it gets back to Big South Conference action Mar. 27-28 when it heads toward the coastline to take on Charleston Southern in a three-game series in N. Charleston, S.C. The series begins on Friday, Mar. 27 at 5 p.m. and will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 28 with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
