Eagles Rally To Take Opening Game Of Series Against The Bucs

N. Charleston, S.C. – Winthrop softball held off Charleston Southern in its first game of the Big South Conference series with a 7-5 win, Friday evening.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Neither team got it going offensive in the first or second innings
  • Tabitha Perry and Mili Watts both earned a walk to get the Eagles on base in the third
  • The Eagles plated three in the top of the third
  • A single from Rebecca Amos then brought in Perry to make it a 2-0 game
  • Annelisa Winebarger was hit by a pitch to score Peyton Bryden after loading the bases with Darrah Nickens and Tia Beckham off a fielder's choice and a walk, bringing the Eagles' lead to 3-0
  • Charleston Southern battled back in the bottom of the third and plated three runs to make it a tied game after earning five hits
  • Emma Roberson scored on a wild pitch for a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth
  • The Buccaneers took the lead in the bottom of the fifth after Harper Schoeneweis doubled to center field, plating Jordyn Dimond and then scoring off a Carsten Sandvig single, making it a 5-4 game
  • The Eagles battled back in the top of the sixth, taking a 7-5 lead
  • Perry hit a double to center field to score Mili Watts
  • Amos tripled and scored on a throwing error, also plating Perry
  • Charleston Southern threatened in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to take advantage, giving the Eagles the 7-5 win in the first game of the series

EXTRA BASES
  • Tabitha Perry hit her second career double, which tied the game at 5-5
  • Bryden extended her streak of reaching base safely to 11 games
  • Nickens extended her streak of reaching base safely to nine games
  • Amos and Perry led the team in hits with two
  • The win was the fourth straight in conference play
