SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Winthrop University baseball squad got solo homers from
Josh Skowronski and
Cade Norton to beat Sacramento State, 7-5, on Saturday afternoon at John Smith Field, taking the series against the Hornets.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Skowronski launched a solo homer to right to give Winthrop a 1-0 lead in the first
- Sacramento State answered with two in the second on a Jacob Cortez two-run single and added another in the third on a Jakob Poturnak RBI single to take a 3-1 lead
- Winthrop broke through in the fifth after Grossington and Natividad were hit by consecutive pitches to start the inning
- Skowronski singled home Grossington, as Wouters followed with an RBI single and McGuire doubled to left center to plate Skowronski and cap a three-run frame for a 4-3 lead
- Garrett Byrd kept the Hornets in check with 2.2 innings of relief before Sacramento State tied it at 4-4 and took a 5-4 lead with two runs in the sixth on an RBI double by Sam Harry and an RBI single by Cameron Sewell
- Norton answered with a solo homer to left in the seventh to tie it at 5-5, then Grossington's RBI fielder's choice scored McGuire for a 6-5 lead
- Wouters doubled home an insurance run in the eighth to push it to 7-5
- Walker Brodt and Ben Rehkow combined to keep Sacramento State scoreless in the seventh and eighth before Harrison Wilson worked out of a two-on jam in the eighth and retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his third save
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Brodt earned his second win with 1.1 scoreless innings, continuing a stretch of reliability out of the bullpen
- Wilson locked down his third save, stranding two runners in the eighth before a clean ninth
- Wouters, McGuire and Grossington each collected three hits as the lineup stayed hot after Friday's 18-hit performance
- Skowronski's solo shot in the first set the tone and he reached base four times on the day
