Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop swept a doubleheader Friday afternoon with wins of 7-3 and 7-4 over Gardner-Webb, in Big South Conference action.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- Eagles struck first as Annelisa Winebarger led off the bottom of the second with a home run to left
- Grayson Buckner and Mili Watts followed with back-to-back singles
- Two batters later Rebecca Amos singled up the middle to score Buckner from second
- Peyton Bryden followed with a double to left center and moved to third on the throw home as Watts and Amos scored on the play
- Darrah Nickens stepped up and hit a two-run home run to left for a 6-0 lead
- The Runnin' Bulldogs cut the Eagle lead in half in the top of the third as Maggie Knight hit a three-run home run to center
- Eagles added some insurance in the bottom of the sixth as Bryden singled to third to score Emma Roberson who had tripled with one out
- Emmy Cardenas earned the win in the circle as she tossed a complete game allowing the three runs on 11 hits with a walk and two strikeouts
Game 2
- Winthrop grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the second inning as Tia Beckham led off with a double down the left field line and came around to score on a single up the middle by Watts
- Gardner-Webb responded by taking the lead in the top of the third inning
- Annicka McLaughlin got things going with a one out single followed by a walk by Reese Collier
- Both of them moved over a base into scoring position on a wild pitch
- With the bases loaded, Knight scored McLaughling with a sac fly to right and then a single to center by Caitlin Colley scored Collier for a 2-1 lead
- Eagles tied the game in the bottom half of the third as Amos led off with a triple
- Bryden came through with a grounder to short to score Amos as the grounder was misplayed as Bryden reached on an error
- Runnin' Bulldogs regained the lead in the top of the fourth as Lauren Spainhower singled with two outs and eventually scored on a single by Collier
- Winthrop tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth as Beckham delivered a single up the middle to score Winebarger from second
- Gardner-Webb threatened in the sixth and loaded the bases with two outs but Lonna Addison got a ground out to end the top half
- The Eagles added some insurance in the bottom of the sixth as Bryden, Nickens, Beckham and Buckner all came through with RBI singles
- Gardner-Webb added another run in the top of the fourth as Taylor Dreher doubled with two outs followed by a double from Madden McMahan-Waters to make it a 7-4 lead for Winthrop
EXTRA BASES
- With the doubleheader sweep the Eagles win their first conference series of the season
- This was the first doubleheader sweep over Gardner-Webb since Apr. 15, 2022
- Bryden extended her streak of reaching base safely to eight games while Nickens has reached safely in six consecutive games
- She had five hits on the day and had a team-high five RBI
- On the day the Eagles were 10-for-27 (.370) with runners in scoring position and leadoff batters were 7-for-12
