Lindsay's 15 Saves, Warren's Hat Trick Power Winthrop to 7-6 Win Over Iona

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- Christina Warren scored three first-quarter goals to stake the Winthrop University lacrosse team to an early lead, and Mikaylah Lindsay made 15 saves to preserve a 7-6 victory over Iona on Wednesday at Morgan Bros. Field. 
FIRST QUARTER 
  • Gabby Pierpont won the opening draw control to set the tone for the Eagles on the neutral site 
  • Christina Warren opened the scoring at the 12:46 mark off an Olivia Paton assist, and followed 33 seconds later on an Ava-Claire Collins assist to make it 2-0 
  • Warren completed her first-quarter hat trick with a goal at the 5:00 mark, again assisted by Paton, to push the lead to 3-0 
  • Lindsay turned away four Iona shots in the period to keep the Eagles' shutout intact heading into the second quarter 

SECOND QUARTER 
  • Iona scored three times in less than six minutes to knot the game at 3-3, with Calen Norton, Alyssa Castellano and Maliya Haddock each finding the cage 
  • Ava-Claire Collins answered immediately with a free-position goal at 3:41 to give Winthrop a 4-3 lead 
  • Lindsay made four saves in the quarter to keep the Eagles within striking distance during Iona's run 
  • Haley Lauer buried a shot at the buzzer to level the game at 4-4 heading into the break 

THIRD QUARTER 
  • Iona took its first lead of the game early in the third on a Sydney Langton free-position goal at 12:48 to go ahead 5-4 
  • Norton struck again at 8:40 to push the Gaels' lead to 6-4, forcing a Winthrop response 
  • Emily Hollinger cut the deficit to one at 7:28 off a Mollie Calabrese assist, keeping the Eagles within reach heading into the fourth 
  • Lindsay made three saves in the quarter to prevent Iona from pulling away, including a free-position stop on Sydney Grassi 

FOURTH QUARTER 
  • Hollinger tied the game at 6-6 on a man-up free-position goal at 11:54, capitalizing on a yellow card against Iona's Arianna Burns 
  • Olivia Paton put Winthrop ahead for good at 9:36 off a Christina Warren assist, giving the Eagles a 7-6 lead they would not surrender 
  • Iona mounted a late push, but Lindsay turned away five fourth-quarter shots to seal the win 
  • Pierpont won the final draw control and the Eagle defense ran out the clock to secure the victory 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
  • Warren finished with three goals and an assist for four points, all three goals coming in the first quarter in a dominant opening performance 
  • Lindsay was outstanding between the pipes, stopping 15 of 21 Iona shots on goal across 60 minutes to earn the win, with her 15 saves tying ninth all-time in program history 
  • Paton contributed a goal and two assists, with her assist on the game-winning goal coming after back-to-back key Iona turnovers in the fourth quarter 
  • Pierpont led all players with five draw controls and added three ground balls at the neutral site 
  • Hollinger scored twice in the second half, including the man-up equalizer that set the stage for Winthrop's game-winning run 
  • Iona's Haddock led all players with 10 shots but went 1-for-6 on shots on goal as Lindsay repeatedly turned her away 
  • Winthrop won the draw control battle 10-4 and went a perfect 25-of-25 in clear attempts 
  • The Eagles improve to 5-3 overall with the neutral-site win, their third straight victory and first three-game win streak since 2021

The Eagles return to Rock Hill, to open their conference slate against High Point on Wednesday.
