Eagles Plate Five in the Ninth, Rolls Past Pacific to Open West Coast Trip

STOCKTON, Calif. -- The Winthrop University baseball team broke open a one-run game with five runs in the ninth inning and Mason Tompkins threw five scoreless innings in relief as the Eagles opened a West Coast trip with an 8-2 victory over Pacific on Tuesday evening at Klein Family Field.
GAME INFORMATION

RECORD: Winthrop (15-6) | Pacific (8-13)
WINTHROP LEADERS: Alan Benhardt (3-for-4, 3 RBI, walk, SB) | Cade Norton (2-for-5, 2 RBI, SB) | Gabe Natividad (2-for-5, RBI)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Natividad singled to start the game and scored on a wild pitch during a Skowronski walk to put Winthrop up 1-0
  • Benhardt followed with an RBI single through the right side to make it 2-0, continuing a stretch where the junior has been one of Winthrop's most productive hitters
  • Pacific tied it in the second on RBI singles by Derek Bartram and Colin Spear
  • Tompkins replaced Evan Vandenbosch in the third and shut the door, retiring 15 of 16 batters faced over five scoreless innings on just 50 pitches
  • Both offenses went quiet from the third through the seventh as Tompkins and Pacific reliever Connor Raridan traded zeroes
  • Benhardt ripped an RBI triple to right center in the eighth to break the tie at 3-2
  • Winthrop's late-inning offense showed up again in the ninth as the Eagles sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five off Ethan Shaver
  • Natividad tripled home Grossington, Skowronski singled in Natividad, Norton drove in two with a single through the left side and Benhardt capped it with another RBI single
  • Garrett Byrd closed it out with 1.2 scoreless innings of relief, stranding two runners in the eighth and striking out three

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Tompkins earned his second win of the season, holding Pacific to three hits over five scoreless innings on just 50 pitches and extending his scoreless streak to 13 innings over his last two outings after throwing eight shutout frames against Princeton
  • Benhardt went 3-for-4 with three RBI, building on a hot stretch that has seen him come through in big spots during the Radford series sweep as well
  • Byrd earned the save with 1.2 scoreless innings
