SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Winthrop University baseball team was held to two hits and fell 13-1 to Sacramento State on Thursday evening at John Smith Field as the West Coast trip continued.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sacramento State scored four in the second on five hits, highlighted by an Erick Dessens two-run single to left field
- The Hornets added single runs in the fourth and fifth to push the lead to 6-0 before two more in the sixth made it 8-0
- Lay held Winthrop hitless through three innings and did not allow a baserunner until Wouters doubled to right in the fourth
- Sacramento State put the game out of reach with five in the eighth, sending nine batters to the plate as Carson Everrette walked two and hit two without recording an out
- Handzel singled and scored on a wild pitch in the ninth for Winthrop's only run
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Lay needed just 83 pitches to get through eight innings, holding Winthrop to one hit and striking out 11
- Gilley took the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits over 3.1 innings
- Shane Keup provided the lone bright spot on the mound, striking out three in 1.1 scoreless innings
- Winthrop managed just two hits on the night and struck out 12 times
