Natividad's Walk-Off in 14th Lifts Eagles over Radford in Big South Opener

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Gabe Natividad singled home Grant McGuire with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 14th inning as Winthrop opened Big South Conference play with a 10-9 walk-off victory over Radford on Friday afternoon at Founders Field, its first extra-innings win since 2023.

WINTHROP LEADERS: Cade Norton (4-for-7, 2 doubles, 2 RBI) | Grant McGuire (3-for-6, RBI, walk) | Gabe Natividad (2-for-6, 3 RBI, 2 HBP) 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Winthrop scored twice in the second on back-to-back HBP RBIs from Natividad and Hernandez with the bases loaded 
  • Norton tripled in the third and scored on a McGuire single to make it 3-0 
  • Breckin Nace's two-run homer in the fourth cut it to 3-2 
  • Grossington's RBI groundout in the sixth and a Skowronski solo homer in the seventh pushed the lead to 5-2 
  • Norton's RBI double later in the seventh made it 6-2 
  • Gilley tossed eight innings of four-hit, two-run ball before Radford erupted for six in the ninth to take an 8-6 lead 
  • Winthrop answered in the bottom of the ninth as Benhardt laid down an RBI bunt and Norton ripped a game-tying RBI double off the wall, coming inches from a home run that would have completed the cycle 
  • Radford took a 9-8 lead in the 12th on an Eli Hudgins bases-loaded HBP 
  • Natividad singled home the tying run with two outs in the bottom of the 12th 
  • Brodt tossed two scoreless innings in the 13th and 14th to keep it tied 
  • McGuire and Alfonso Rivera walked to start the 14th, Grossington drew a bases-loaded walk and Natividad singled to first to end it 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
  • Gilley allowed two runs on four hits over eight innings with six strikeouts on 91 pitches 
  • McNeely struck out four over 2.1 scoreless innings to keep it tied after the ninth-inning collapse 
  • Brodt earned the win with two scoreless, hitless innings 
  • Norton went 4-for-7 with two doubles and a triple, needing only a homer for the cycle 
  • The game lasted 4 hours and 44 minutes
