Tompkins Twirls Gem, Baseball Routs Princeton, 11-0

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Mason Tompkins held Princeton to one hit over eight shutout innings, as Winthrop bounced back with an 11-0 victory Wednesday afternoon at Founders Field. 
GAME INFORMATION

WINTHROP LEADERS: Jaylen Hernandez (2-for-3, double, HR, 3 RBI, HBP) | Corey Wouters (2-for-4, 2 doubles, HBP) | Alan Benhardt (2-for-3, 2 RBI, HBP, 2 SB) 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Hernandez doubled to right center to lead off the first and Skowronski was hit by a pitch before a Princeton fielding error loaded the bases 
  • Benhardt singled home Hernandez and Norton added a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead after one 
  • Winthrop left the bases loaded in the second but McGuire singled home Benhardt in the third after a stolen base to make it 3-0 
  • Hernandez launched a two-run homer to deep right in the fourth after Natividad singled to push it to 5-0 
  • Wouters doubled and scored on a Princeton error in the fourth to make it 6-0, and Benhardt singled home Wouters again in the sixth for a 7-0 lead 
  • Norton reached on another Princeton error in the seventh, eventually scored on a throwing error and Hernandez added a sacrifice fly to push it to 9-0 
  • Wouters scored on a wild pitch and Chet Bowling lifted a sacrifice fly in the eighth to cap it at 11-0 
  • Tompkins was in control all day, allowing just a Grant Werdesheim single in the sixth while striking out seven on 89 pitches 
  • Dylan Hansen struck out two in a clean ninth to finish off the shutout 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
  • Tompkins earned his first win with eight innings of one-hit ball, his longest outing of the season, and setting a new career-high in strikeouts 
  • Princeton committed five errors, leading to four unearned runs 
  • Hernandez has now homered in four of his last six games 
  • Wouters reached base three times and scored three runs, doubling twice, now carrying an eight game hitting streak 
  • Winthrop snapped a two-game skid and improved to 11-6 on the year
