Columbia, S.C. – Winthrop softball concluded the Gamecock Invitational with an 8-7 loss to Syracuse and 18-0 loss to 12
th-ranked South Carolina, Sunday afternoon.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Syracuse
- Lonna Addison ran into some trouble in the top of the first with a leadoff double followed by a walk to put two on with no outs
- Addison proceeded to get the next three batters with a fly out, strikeout and ground out
- Winthrop grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first as Darrah Nickens got things going with a one out single to left
- Peyton Bryden followed with a single to left field to put runners and first and second
- Annelisa Winebarger as she drew a walk to load the bases
- Tia Beckham put the ball in play as Nickens raced home to score, but Syracuse got the second out with a force out at second
- Grayson Buckner stepped in and delivered a single to left to score Bryden and give the Eagles a 2-0 lead
- In the bottom of the second, the Eagles loaded the bases again and Bryden delivered again with a bases clearing triple to right center for a 5-0 lead
- Syracuse cut into the Eagle lead in the top of the fourth as Lauren Fox doubled followed by a walk to Kendall Gaunt with two outs
- Kaimi Tulua stepped up and hit a 2-1 pitch to center for a pinch-hit three-run homer
- In the bottom half of the fourth the Eagles got two runs back to build a 7-3 lead
- Bryden reached on an error and moved to second on a wild pitch
- Winebarger walked and then both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch
- Following a walk from Buckner, Aspen King came through with a pinch-hit two-run single to center
- Syracuse tied the game in the top of the sixth on a couple of RBI ground outs
- In the bottom of the seventh, Tabitha Perry drew a two-out walk but was stranded
- The Orange grabbed an 8-7 lead in the top of the eighth as Jadyn Burney singled to lead off and then stole second to get into scoring position
- Burney eventually came around to score on ground ball to short
- Rebecca Amos drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the eighth and then was caught stealing trying to get into scoring position
- Nickens line a shot to right center that was caught and then Bryden popped out
vs. South Carolina
- Eagles threatened in the top of the first as Amos singled to lead off the game and then moved to second on a single by Bryden
- The two were stranded as Winebarger flied out to right moving Amos to third and then Tia Beckham grounded out to end the threat
- South Carolina took advantage of leadoff walk and then two batters later Arianna Rodi drew a walk, both on full counts
- Tate Davis singled down the right field line to load the bases and then the first run came across on a wild pitch that moved the runners over one base
- Tori Ensley singled to give South Carolina a 2-0 lead and the third run of the inning came on a sac fly by Lexi Winters
- A three-run home run by Karley Shelton doubled the Gamecocks lead and then back-to-back doubles plated three more runs for an 8-0 advantage
EXTRA BASES
- Rebecca Amos' single to lead off the game gave was her fourth straight game with a base hit
- Peyton Bryden also has a hit in four straight games to start the season
ON DECK
Winthrop hosts several teams this weekend for the Garnet and Gold Tournament. Game play is slated to begin Friday afternoon with a double header against Kent State (3:00 p.m.) and Le Moyne (5:00 p.m.)
