Bunch Walk-off Homer Highlights Two Wins On Friday

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop opened the Garnet & Gold Tournament with a 4-2 victory over Kent State before taking the second game in a thrilling walk-off home run to defeat Le Moyne 7-4, Friday afternoon at Terry Field.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Kent St.
  • Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first as led off with a single and stole second before Peyton Bryden stepped up and smashed a two-run home run to left
  • Winthrop doubled its lead in the bottom of the second as Emma Roberson led off with a single and stole second to get things started
  • She moved over to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a wild pitch to lead 3-0
  • Later in the inning, Grayson Buckner singled home Bryden for a 4-0 lead
  • Kent State got on the board in the sixth inning as Ashlyn Porter ripped an RBI double to center
  • Tayler Likens hit a two out home run to make it a 4-2 lead but the Eagles held on
vs. Le Moyne
  • Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to an RBI double from Darrah Nickens who also came home on the play after a throwing error into foul territory as she approached second base
  • Le Moyne got one back in the second inning on a sacrifice fly from Camryn Shenk
  • The Dolphins took the lead in the top of the third as Arianna Exarchakis hit a one out three-run home run to lead 4-2
  • Bryden led off the third inning with a home run to make it a one run game
  • Eagles tied the game at 4-4 in the fourth inning as Rebecca Amos came through with an RBI single to center
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Nickens and Aspen King reached with singles and with two outs, Ali Bunch stood in and hammered a three-run walk-off homer to center field
EXTRA BASES
  • Bryden extended her hitting streak to six games
  • Eagles win their third straight home opener after the win over Kent State
  • Nickens had her first three-hit game as an Eagle
  • With the victory over Kent State, coach Fuller now has 100 wins at the helm of the Winthrop program

Eagles are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 14 as they'll take on Kent State at 3 p.m. and Robert Morris at 5:30 p.m. on day two of the Garnet & Gold Tournament.
