Eagles Split On Final Day Of Garnet & Gold Tournament

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop split on the day with a 9-5 loss to Kent State before bouncing back for a 4-3 win over Robert Morris to end the final day of the Garnet & Gold Tournament, on Saturday.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Kent St.
  • Kent State grabbed the lead in the top of the first on an RBI ground out by Gabby Quinn
  • Golden Flashes increased their lead to 4-0 in the third as Cal Shaulis and Taylor Likens provided RBI singles
  • Winthrop got three back in the bottom of the third to make it a one run game
  • Rebecca Amos led off the inning with a single, stole second and came around to score on a Darrah Nickens single to left
  • Ali Bunch delivered a two-run, two-out single up the middle to cut the Kent State lead to 4-3
  • Shaulis led off the 5th inning with a home run to left for a two-run cushion
  • Winthrop cut the deficit back to one run in the bottom of the fifth inning as Grayson Buckner drove home Bryden
  • Kent State opened the game up in the top of the sixth as Leilani Johnson hit a two-out grand slam for a 9-4 lead
  • Winthrop didn't go down without a fight as it put runners on and Grayson Buckner drove home Bryden to make it 9-5
vs. Robert Morris
  • Eagles grabbed the lead first with a run across in the bottom of the first
  • Darrah Nickens hit an opposite field, two-out home run over the left field fence to lead 1-0
  • Colonials tied it at 1-1 in the top of the second as Eloise Facher led off with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded
  • Winthrop got the lead back in the bottom of the fourth as Nickens led off with a single and eventually came around to score on a single to center by Mili Watts
  • Tia Beckham drove home Grayson Bucker followed by an RBI double to left center by Tabitha Perry to lead 4-1
  • Robert Morris cut the lead in half in the 5th inning as Alivia Hare led off with a single and eventually came around to score on a ground out
  • It became a one run lead for the Eagles in the sixth as Aglaia Rudd led off the inning with a home run to left

EXTRA BASES
  • Bryden singled in the first against Kent State to extend her hitting streak to seven games
  • Despite putting the ball in play against Robert Morris, including a laser right at the shortstop in her final at-bat, the hitting streak for Bryden came to an end
  • Addison earned her second win in the circle as she tossed another complete game, allowing three runs on eight hits and now has 16 strikeouts to one walk in the last two starts (14 innings)
  • Buckner now has the team's top active hitting streak at four games

ON DECK
Winthrop is back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 17 as it travels to Cullowhee, N.C. for a noon doubleheader against Western Carolina.
