Cullowhee, N.C. – Winthrop dropped a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Western Carolina as it fell 9-2 in game one and 11-5 in the nightcap.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- Winthrop grabbed the early lead as Peyton Bryden hit a one out solo home run to left center in the top of the first
- Catamounts struck in the bottom of the second to take a one run lead
- Maya McPherson led off with a double to right as Rebecca Amos couldn't locate the fly ball in the sun in time as the leadoff batter reached
- That was followed with a bloop single to center by Taylor Waitley to put runners at the corners
- Courtney Marks tied the game on an RBI ground out as McPherson just slid in ahead of the tag by Leah Rushing at the plate
- Two batters later Rylee Butler singled to center to score Waitley for the 2-1 lead
- Eagles tied the game in the 5th inning as Amos led off the inning with a double and came around to score on a Darrah Nickens single to center
- Catamounts took advantage of a couple of fielding errors by the Eagles in the sixth to push six runs across
Game 2
- Eagles struck first as they led 2-0 after the top of the first
- Amos reached on an error to lead off the game and then moved to second on a single by Bryden
- Buckner moved Amos to third on her fielder's choice grounder to second, putting runners at the corners
- Amos came home on a fielding error for the first run and then Buckner scored on an infield single by Lonna Addison for the 2-0 lead
- Catamounts tied the game in the bottom half of the first as Lily Bell led off with a single and two batters later Sydney Dirks hit a two-run home run to center
- Eagles took a 3-2 lead in the top of the third as Bryden drew a leadoff walk to set the table
- Bryden moved to second on a grounder by Nickens and two batters later Addison singled to center to plate Bryden
- McPherson tied the game in the bottom of the third as she hit a one out home run to left
- Catamounts added five more runs in the bottom of the fourth to open up an 8-3 lead
- Winthrop got two runs back in the top of the fifth Grayson Buckner drew a leadoff walk and two batters later Addison drilled a home run to left field to cut the deficit to 8-5
- Western Carolina added three more runs over the final two innings to
EXTRA BASES
- Bryden had a hit in each game and now has a hit in 9-of-10 games this season and an RBI in 5-of-10
- Bryden hit her third home run of the season, already two shy of her career-best of five she set in 2025
- Addison finished with a career-high four RBI at the plate in game two
- Addison's homer in game two was the sixth of her collegiate career and second as an Eagle
- Buckner scored two runs on the day and is now one shy of 70 in her career

Winthrop returns home to host a tournament (Feb. 20-22) for a second consecutive weekend. The Eagles will open up play on Friday, Feb. 20 as they'll face Drexel at 3:00 p.m. followed by George Washington at 5:30 p.m.
