Eagles Rally Late In Both Wins Friday At Coach Cooke Memorial

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop captured two victories to open the Coach Cooke Memorial, rallying late to beat Drexel 4-3 and then earning a 4-3 walk-off win over GW in the nightcap.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Drexel
  • Dragons grabbed the early lead as Alldred pushed across the first run of the game with an RBI single up the middle
  • Winthrop answered in the bottom half of the first as Peyton Bryden drew a one out walk and then Darrah Nickens took a 2-2 pitch over the fence in left for a 2-1 lead
  • The Dragons tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the second as Olivia Sciulli scored from second on a single to right by Kylah Reading
  • In the top of the sixth inning, Drexel had back-to-back RBI singles to take a 4-2 lead
  • In the bottom half, Emma Roberson led off with a bunt single
  • Then Rebecca Amos laid down a bunt to move Roberson to second and beat the throw to first and Roberson raced around to third
  • Amos stole second and then Nickens walked to load the bases
  • Grayson Buckner singled to right center to make it a one run lead as the bases were still loaded
  • Tia Beckham stepped up and ripped a shot to the left center gap for a double and cleared the bases for a 6-4 lead
vs. George Washington
  • The Revolutionaries struck first as P. Hayward delivered a two out RBI single to center to score J. Ramos
  • GW loaded the bases with one out in the third as Lonna Addison struck out the next batter for the second out
  • Gilliland hit a flare off the end of the bat just out of reach of Buckner's diving attempt as two runners came around to score
  • The second run just beat the final out at third as Roberson collected the ball and her throw to third base was in time to get Corpuz in time for the third out and end the threat
  • Winthrop got on the board in the bottom of the sixth as Amos reached on a fielding error trying to reach on a bunt and then two batters later stole second
  • Beckham came through again as she singled to center and Amos raced home to make it a two run game
  • The Eagles rallied with no one on and two outs in the bottom of the seventh
  • Carli Pearson singled to right followed by a pinch-hit double to center by Sophia Lawson
  • Pinch-hitter Annelisa Winebarger reached as she hit a shot off the pitchers glove and beat the throw to first as Pearson raced around to score on the play
  • Then Bryden stood in and delivered a walk-off double to left center

EXTRA BASES
  • Beckham extended her streak of reaching base to five and has now hit safely in four games
  • The Eagles scored eight of the 10 runs on the day in the sixth or seventh inning
  • Eagles are now 2-2 on the year in one run games

ON DECK
Winthrop is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 21 as they'll take on Mount St. Mary's at 12:30 p.m. followed a 3 p.m. contest with Drexel.
