Eagles Power Their Way Past Drexel

Winthrop Hit Five Home Runs In The Contest

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop softball dominated Drexel 16-6 in five innings Saturday evening of day two of  the Coach Cooke Memorial.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Drexel had a strong start in the top of the first, plating 3 with a fielding error and several singles
  • Tia Beckham hit her first home run of the season in the bottom of the first, clearing the bases of Rebecca Amos, Peyton Bryden, and Darrah Nickens
  • Doubles by Carli Pearson and Ali Bunch brought in three more runs for the Eagles, making it a 6-3 game at the end of the first inning
  • Ali Bunch allowed no hits in the top of the second
  • The Eagles had a hot second inning, bringing in ten runs
  • Darrah Nickens hit back-to-back home runs at bat, the first ones of her Winthrop career
  • Ali Bunch hit another home run, her second one of her collegiate career to plate Tia Beckham
  • Peyton Bryden then homered to clear the bases and plate Emma Roberson, Carli Pearson, and Rebecca Amos
  • The Dragons battled back in the top of the third, with Kalea Calugay hitting a home run off and plating Natalie Alldred
  • A fielding error allowed Drexel to plate one more to bring their total runs to 6
  • Drexel had only two hits in the top of the fourth, while Winthrop only had one
  • Neither team earned runs in the fourth or fifth innings, with the game being called at five innings and Winthrop winning 16-6

 EXTRA BASES
  • Rebecca Amos went 4-4, setting a career-high in hits and also scored three of the 16 runs earned by Winthrop (three runs are also a career-best)
  • Darrah Nickens got her first multiple-home run game as an Eagle
  • Tia Beckham, Peyton Bryden, and Nickens all had 4 RBI in the game
  • The Eagles had five home runs in the game, the first time since Mar. 7, 2025 in a 16-0 win over Norfolk State as the team hit five over the fence in that game
  • This was Beckham's second grand slam as an Eagle as she last did so on Apr. 25, 2025 in a win over PC
  • Beckham has eight RBI in three games this weekend and now has 50 in her Winthrop career
  • Beckham extended her hitting streak to five games and has now reached base safely in six straight
  • Carli Pearson has a four-game hitting streak and Bryden has reached base safely in five straight
  • The Eagles did not allow any runs in three out of five innings
  • After earning their first win over Drexel on Friday, the Eagles have now won two straight in the series

Winthrop is back in action Sunday (Feb. 22) afternoon as it plays in the final game of the Coach Cooke Memorial when it faces Mount St. Mary's at 12:30 p.m.
