Columbia, S.C. – Winthrop softball fell to Syracuse by a score of 11–2 (6), Saturday afternoon at the Gamecock Invitational.

WHAT HAPPENED
- Emmy Cardenas started the first two innings strong, allowing no hits or runs
- After both teams went down in order in the first and second, the Orange put one on the board in the top of the third after a double plated Lantier
- Madelyn Miller took the mound in the top of the fourth and allowed two runs on a double down left field, scoring Sophia Taliaferro, and a sacrifice fly from Milija Seaton plated Mackenzie Knight
- Winthrop got its first hit and stolen base of the game from Grayson Buckner in the bottom of the fourth
- A fielding error from Buckner in the top of the fifth added another Syracuse run by Burney
- Knight got a home run off Maddie Wiant out to left field, increasing Syracuse's lead 6-0
- Winthrop got on the board in the bottom of the fifth after Peyton Bryden cleared the bases with a single to left field, plating Emma Roberson
- Ali Bunch was hit by a pitch to plate Rebecca Amos, earning the Eagles their second run of the day
- Carli Pearson reached on an error but was left stranded. A groundout from Roberson and a popup from Amos ended the game in six innings

Winthrop has a doubleheader on the final day of the Gamecock Invitational as it will take on Syracuse again on Sunday, Feb. 8 at 10 a.m., and #12 South Carolina at 3 p.m.
