Columbia, S.C. – Winthrop softball opened the 2026 with a hard fought 1-0 loss to #19/#21 Virginia Tech, Friday evening at the Gamecock Invitational.

WHAT HAPPENED
- After both teams went down in order in the first, Peyton Bryden led off the second with a double to center
- Three batters later, Tabitha Perry drew a four pitch walk with two outs to put two on, but the inning ended as Carli Pearson popped up to short on a 1-2 count
- Hokie struck in the bottom of the second as Mizelle reached on a fielding error with two outs
- After Mizelle stole second, Abromavage doubled to left center to score Mizelle for the early lead
- Rebecca Amos singled through the left side with one out in the top of the third and then stole second to get into scoring position on the same play Tia Beckham struck out
- Ramos was stranded as Annelisa Winebarger struck out to end the top half
- Eagles last chance saw Bryden and Grayson Buckner put the ball in play, but unable to reach safely
EXTRA BASES
- Rebecca Amos picked up a hit and a stolen base in her collegiate debut
- Lonna Addison allowed just three hits, one unearned run while tossing her sixth complete game as an Eagle

Winthrop is back in action on Day two of the Gamecock Invitational as it will take on Syracuse on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 3 p.m.
