ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The Winthrop University women's basketball team battled through all four quarters Wednesday night but could not overcome a strong shooting performance, falling 88-74 to High Point at the Winthrop Coliseum.
FIRST QUARTER
- High Point punched first with two quick layups, then turned live-ball pressure into another bucket to take a 6-0 lead by 6:22.
- Winthrop finally broke through at 2:47 when Madison Ruff hit a short jumper in the lane to cut it to 12-2.
- Jada Ryce kept it moving on the next trip, knocking down a jumper off an Amourie Porter dime to make it 12-4 at 2:20.
- After a defensive stop, Mya Pierfax pulled up for a jumper with 0:42 left, trimming it to 16-6.
- Porter capped the quarter with a jumper at 0:13, and Winthrop went to the second down 16-8.
SECOND QUARTER
- Winthrop opened the quarter at the line, with Pierfax hitting two free throws at 9:46 to make it 16-10.
- The Eagles kept attacking downhill, and Porter converted an and-one at 7:59 to cut the margin to 20-13.
- Pierfax answered again in the paint at 6:52 to make it 25-15, then jumped a passing lane for a steal as Winthrop tried to speed the game up.
- A quick defensive stand turned into transition points at 4:05 when Persais Williams finished the fast-break off a Ryiah Wilson assist, pulling Winthrop within 27-19.
- High Point stretched it late with a pair of finishes inside, but Winthrop stayed aggressive and got two at the stripe from Porter after a technical at 1:25.
- Pierfax drilled a three with 0:10 left, but High Point answered at the line before the horn and Winthrop went to halftime trailing 37-26.
THIRD QUARTER
- Winthrop opened the half by winning the glass and cashing in, with Tocarra Johnson converting two free throws at 9:24 after an offensive rebound to make it 37-28.
- The Eagles got out and ran next, with Ruff finishing in transition at 9:02 to cut it to 37-30.
- Winthrop stayed in attack mode, and Johnson finished at the rim off a Cori Lard assist at 6:45 to make it 46-34.
- Pierfax steadied things at the stripe at 5:11, hitting two free throws to keep Winthrop within range at 48-38.
- A momentum-swinging sequence at 4:29 turned into four free throws for High Point, pushing the margin back out to 54-41.
- Pierfax buried a three at the buzzer to close the quarter, as Winthrop went to the fourth trailing 68-48.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Winthrop opened the quarter with consecutive paint touches, with Johnson scoring at 9:43 and again at 8:19 to make it 68-54.
- Porter kept Winthrop's pressure going by knocking down two free throws at 8:49, cutting it to 68-52 earlier in the stretch.
- The Eagles forced a turnover at 7:40 when Ruff picked off a pass, keeping Winthrop's defensive activity high.
- Porter answered with back-to-back buckets at 7:07 and 6:25 as Winthrop tried to carve into the deficit.
- A late burst came off turnovers, with Wilson turning a steal into a fast-break layup at 3:34 and then drilling a three at 3:03 to pull Winthrop within 82-66.
- Winthrop finished with 26 in the fourth, but the gap never fully closed as the Eagles fell 88-74.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Winthrop shot 40.6 percent from the floor (26-for-64) and 19-of-21 at the free-throw line.
- The Eagles won the rebounding battle 38-35, grabbing 13 offensive rebounds and scoring consistently on second chances.
- Winthrop went 3-for-13 from three, with Pierfax hitting two and Wilson adding the other.
- Pierfax led Winthrop with 18 points, Porter added 17, and Johnson finished with 11 to give the Eagles three in double figures.
- Wilson added eight points, two steals and two assists, while Lard recorded three steals and a block as Winthrop forced 14 turnovers.
- High Point shot 46.8 percent from the floor and 8-of-25 from three-point range, knocking down timely perimeter shots in every quarter.
- Macy Spencer led all scorers with 38 points, shooting 11-of-24 from the field and 5-of-14 from beyond the arc while adding seven rebounds.
- Aaliyah Collins added 20 points and four assists, while the Panthers finished with 36 points in the paint and 22 points off turnovers.
