BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- The Winthrop University women's basketball squad outscored their counterparts in the second half, 45-43, but the lead built by the Runnin' Bulldogs proved to be fatal, as Gardner-Webb escaped with the win, 72-69.
Amourie Porter led the way for the Eagles, cementing a new career-high with 26 points, as she battled with Amina Gray, who paced the Dawgs with a game-high 27 points.
FIRST QUARTER
- Winthrop jumped out first as Mya Pierfax picked a pocket and finished in transition to make it 2-0 at the 9:11 mark.
- Gardner-Webb answered immediately behind the arc, as Amina Gray knocked down a triple to put the Runnin' Bulldogs in front 3-2.
- Ryiah Wilson turned defense into offense, swiping a steal and taking it coast-to-coast to cut it to 9-5 with 3:15 left.
- Gardner-Webb caught fire from deep late, getting back-to-back 3-pointers from Jaelyn Acker to open up a 14-5 edge.
- Persais Williams stopped the bleeding with a transition layup off a steal in the final 20 seconds.
- The Eagles trailed 14-7 after one as Gardner-Webb hit four threes in the quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
- Williams opened the scoring at the line to trim it to 14-8 early in the second.
- Jada Ryce buried a jumper to make it 14-10, but Gardner-Webb responded with a pair of Acker three-pointers to stretch the lead.
- Winthrop found a spark with Porter, who drilled a 3-pointer late in the half to make it 38-24 at the break.
- The Eagles held their own in the paint during the second, but Gardner-Webb's perimeter shooting stayed hot.
- Winthrop kept generating extra chances on the glass with multiple offensive rebounds in the period.
- Gardner-Webb carried a 38-24 lead into halftime after hitting ten threes in the half.
THIRD QUARTER
- Winthrop came out swinging as Pierfax knocked down a three pointer on the first minute of the half, then hit another moments later to cut it to 38-30.
- Porter kept the pressure on defensively, picking up a steal that helped fuel the early run.
- Williams attacked the rim and got to the stripe, keeping the comeback moving as the Eagles chipped away.
- Cori Lard buried a three pointer at the 5:12 mark to make it 47-38 and bring Winthrop within single digits.
- Porter added a basket in the final minute as Winthrop kept trading punches despite Gardner-Webb living at the line.
- The Eagles won the quarter 21-15 and went to the fourth down 53-45.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Porter opened the fourth with a finish at the rim and a free throw to pull Winthrop within 53-48.
- Gardner-Webb answered with two huge three-pointers, one from Gray and another from Nyla Walker, to push the lead back to 59-48.
- Winthrop refused to go away as Wilson splashed a three-pointer to make it 61-51 with 6:28 left.
- Madison Ruff scored inside, then Porter followed with back-to-back jumpers as the Eagles trimmed it to 63-57 midway through the quarter.
- Lard drilled a three-pointer with 39 seconds left to make it 67-64, and Pierfax followed with a layup to cut it to 69-66 with 30 seconds remaining.
- Porter hit a deep three-pointer with six seconds left to make it 71-69, but Gardner-Webb iced it at the line in the final moments.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Porter finished with 26 points and nine rebounds, going 9-for-15 from the field and 3-for-4 from deep.
- Lard added six points and six assists, while Pierfax chipped in 14 points and Wilson swiped five steals.
- Gardner-Webb was led by Amina Gray's 27 points, hitting 7-of-10 from three, while Jaelyn Acker added 13 points on four-made threes.
- Winthrop won the paint battle 30-12 and got 34 bench points.
- Gardner-Webb lived from three, going 13-for-25 from deep, and finished 17-for-22 at the line.
- Turnovers were basically even, Winthrop 20, Gardner-Webb 21, both teams scored 20+ points off turnovers.
- Winthrop's pressure showed up with 12 steals, including five from Ryiah Wilson and three from Porter.
- Gardner-Webb's guard play: Nyla Walker had eleven points and six assists, and the Runnin' Bulldogs got ten points from Anaya Harris.
