Greenville, S.C. – Winthrop softball split on the opening day of the Paladin Invitational as it opened with a 6-1 win over West Georgia before falling 10-1 in five innings to Seton Hall, Friday afternoon at Pepsi Stadium.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. West Georgia
- West Georgia had a runner in scoring position in each of the first two innings but Lonna Addison was able to work around it
- It was the Eagles that struck first as Peyton Bryden singled with one out in the bottom of the fourth and then two batters later Tia Beckham homered to left field for a 2-0 lead
- The Wolves got one back in the top of the fifth as Zekylah Boyd led off with a single followed by a bunt single from Jadyn Tummin that led to Boyd being thrown out at third and Tummin moved to second
- The next batter was Megan Waites as she singled to the left side, scoring Tummin but that all as Addison worked out of the jam to maintain the lead
- In the bottom of the fifth, Annelisa Winebarger lead off with a single and two batters later Kaylee Hannon delivered a two-run, two-out pinch-hit home run to left for a 4-1 advantage
- Eagles added two more runs in the sixth inning as Winebarger drove home Mili Watts with a double to right center and then Addison singled to right to score Ali Bunch
vs. Seton Hall
- The Pirates grabbed the lead in the top of the first, taking advantage of a fielding error that eventually led to an unearned run on a passed ball
- Winthrop threatened to tie or take the lead in the bottom of the first as Bryden doubled with one out
- Darrah Nickens followed with a walk but Beckham lined out and Buckner flied out down the line in right to end the threat
- Seton Hall increased its lead in the second as Hobbes reached on a fielder's choice as the Eagle defense got the force out at second but back-to-back singles plated the second run as Hobbes crossed the plate to lead 2-0
- Brennan then drew a walk to load the bases with one out, but Maddie Wiant got a ground out that led to Bryden getting the force out with the throw home
- The next batter was DeMarco and she fouled off three straight pitches before connecting on one for a grand slam to center field for a 6-0 lead
- Eagles tried to answer right away in the bottom of the second as Bunch singled to right to lead off and moved to second on bunt single by Tabitha Perry
- Winthrop couldn't take advantage as Pearson sacrificed the runners into scoring position but Emma Roberson struck out and then Rebecca Amos lined out to left center
- After the Pirates added a two-out, two-run double in the top of the third, Bryden led off the bottom of the inning to try and get something started
- Nickens followed with a walk to put two runners on with no outs
- Beckham flied out to center and then Grayson Buckner ripped a shot at the second baseman who was able to flip the ball to first for an inning-ending double play
- Eagles trailed 10-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth as they loaded the bases and Beckham drew a walk to score a run
- Two batters later with the bases loaded Bunch stepped in and came close to adding more but she lined out to second base to end the threat and the game
EXTRA BASES
- With a leadoff single in the second inning against West Georgia, Tia Beckham extended her hitting streak to eight games before it came to an end against Seton Hall
- Beckham did extend her streak of reaching base as she drew a bases loaded walk against Seton Hall in the fifth and has reached safely in 10 straight games
- Beckham homered in four straight games
- Carli Pearson extended her streak of reaching base to seven games after collecting a hit against West Georgia
- Nickens also has a streak of reaching base as she's now reached base in five straight games
ON DECK
Winthrop is action on Saturday, Feb. 28 on day two of the Paladin Invitational and will face Seton Hall at 2 p.m. and George Mason at 7 p.m.
